Prof Gray has had a focus on water and membrane research for over 27 years. He is part of research teams that are working towards commercialisation of membrane distillation, have introduced ceramic membranes to Australian industry, and is working to demonstrate membrane integrity monitoring technology. In the field of membrane fabrication he has projects that span nanocomposite UF membranes for increased abrasion resistance, nanocomposite pervaporation membranes for niche applications, ceramic membranes for desalination, and small pore size metal membranes. In 2013 he was recognised as Thought Leader in Lux Research&#8217;s international review of water research. He is currently President of the Aseanian Membrane Society, Editor of the Journal of Water Reuse and Desalination, and on the editorial board of Water Research and Desalination journals.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_3&#8243; He is also the Director of NUS Environmental Research Institute and the Director of the Sembcorp-NUS Corporate Laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Ng\u2019s core research interest is in sustainable water management, focusing on biological treatment technologies, membrane bioreactor and microbial electrochemical sensor for water reuse and resource recovery.He has contributed to more than 350 publications in refereed international journals and conference papers. He invented the I2BioS \u2013 an integrated intelligent bio-sensor that provides real-time water toxicity and quality monitoring, which is currently being commercialised through EnvironSens Pte Ltd, a NUS spinoff company. He also serves as an Advisor to WaterROAM Pte Ltd \u2013 a NUS startup and a social enterprise that provides durable and affordable water filters designed for humanitarian use.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Ng is a Fellow of the International Water Association (IWA) and serves as an Associate Editor of Water Research and an Editor of the Journal of Water Reuse and Desalination. His is also the Vice-Chair of of the Management Committee of the IWA Specialist Group on Membrane Technology and a member of the IWA Publication Committee. For their practical applications, their controllable synthesis in crystallinity (quality), size, growth position, growth temperature and quantity is indispensable. Towards the growth controllability, we are tackling the dynamic observation in atomic dimension of the transformation process from amorphous carbon to CNT and to graphene using in-situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) for amorphous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) which include various catalyst metal nanoparticles [1]. Among the various catalyst metals surveyed, low-melting point metals, such as Sn and In, which are rarely used for the conventional chemical vapor deposition, were found to be promising for the low temperature growth of graphene [2-4]. Based on this findings, stacked films of Sn\/C or In\/C were deposited onto oxide substrates, and were simply annealed at 150-250oC in vacuum [2, 3]. As confirmed by Raman analyses, graphene grew even at a temperature as low as 150oC by this simple method [3]. Various works have reported that significant improvement has been observed by incorporating nanomaterials in the separation medium and thus enhancing the capacity of these processes for water and wastewater treatment. The talk will briefly review the overall progress in this area. In addition, we have recently extended the study to assess the environmental impacts through a life cycle assessment (LCA) of a composite polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane (incorporating nanomaterials) and compared with neat PVDF membrane on algal membrane photoreactor (A-MPR) system&#8217;s overall sustainability. From the LCA analysis, silver\/graphene oxide &#8211; polyvinylidene fluoride (Ag\/GO-PVDF) membrane fabrication showed higher environmental impact than the neat PVDF membrane fabrication due to the addition of Ag\/GO nanohybrids into the polymer. However, the A-MPR system using the Ag\/GO-PVDF membrane exhibited better environmental footprint due to the improved performance of the modified membrane in producing higher volume of permeate as the output. Therefore, the A-MPR system using Ag\/GO-PVDF membrane had outweighed the additional environmental impact of the Ag\/GO-PVDF membrane fabrication process. Energy demand was identified as the main environmental hotspot in the LCA analysis. Subsequently, sensitivity analysis was performed to find out the effect of various energy mix for electricity generation towards the environment. The analysis revealed that the energy source for electricity generation had significant influence on the overall sustainability of the A-MPR system. The use of grid with 100% renewable energy (hydropower and geothermal) and solar photovoltaic might be able to mitigate 94.8% and 97.5% of CO2 emission, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;
