{"id":5237,"date":"2025-10-24T09:06:57","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T09:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.utm.my\/cairo\/?p=5237"},"modified":"2025-10-24T09:07:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T09:07:00","slug":"empowering-green-innovation-through-ai-day-2-of-the-great-innovation-challenge-2025-workshop-wraps-up-strong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.utm.my\/cairo\/empowering-green-innovation-through-ai-day-2-of-the-great-innovation-challenge-2025-workshop-wraps-up-strong\/","title":{"rendered":"Empowering Green Innovation through AI: Day 2 of the Great Innovation Challenge 2025 Workshop Wraps Up Strong!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, 24 October 2025 \u2014 The final session of the Great Innovation Challenge (GIC) 2025 Workshop &amp; Kick-Off, organised by the Centre for Artificial Intelligence &amp; Robotics (CAIRO), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), concluded with an insightful module on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration in Plastic Recycling Machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Led by Dr. Noor Jannah from UTM, the session explored how AI-driven subsystems can transform traditional plastic recycling machines into smart, efficient, and sustainable solutions \u2014 aligning perfectly with the GIC 2025 theme, \u201cReengineering Plastic for Profit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop, held in collaboration with Great Eastern Takaful Berhad (GETB) and IEEE Kuala Lumpur Subsection gathered Malaysia\u2019s most promising student innovators to explore the role of technology in advancing sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1 AI for Smarter, Sustainable Recycling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Jannah introduced participants to practical AI applications in recycling, such as computer vision for plastic type recognition, predictive maintenance, and energy-efficient process optimisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants also discussed common industry challenges, including manual sorting errors, inconsistent molding quality, and high energy usage \u2014 identifying how lightweight AI systems can address these issues effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the AI features highlighted were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udde9 Plastic Type Recognition using CNN, MobileNet &amp; EfficientNet<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2699\ufe0f Automated Sorting &amp; Feeding via YOLOv8 \/ Faster-RCNN<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd27 Smart Shredding Control through reinforcement learning<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd0d Defect Detection &amp; Quality Inspection with GAN and Autoencoder models<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd0b Energy Management using AI-driven optimisation for sustainable operation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAI should simplify, not complicate.
