It will discuss the fundamental principle of AR and its development in mobile application, and then gives insight to AR tools or libraries available for mobile application to solve the common technical issues and problems. Numerous existing AR projects and examples will be demonstrated to support the discussed theory.

Outline

This course consists of both lecture and hands-on sessions. Each lecture session will be concluded with the hands-on session where participants will be able to apply the theories learned in the lecture session.

Introduction

AR Browsers

Interface Design

Research Directions

Objectives

Introduce the participants to the AR field, specifically in applying it to mobile-based devices.

Create AR using AR browsers.

Design AR interfaces.

Explain the direction of current researches related to AR.

Knowledge Requirement

Participants need to have basic knowledge in programming.

Technical Requirements

Participants need to bring their own laptop (Windows 8 or Mac OS X 10.9 recommended) with a minimum Intel i5 or AMD A8 processor and 4GB random access memory (RAM), and smartphone or tablet. To avoid unnecessary problems, participants are encouraged to install Java Development Kit (JDK), Android SDK and Unity 5 before attending the course. We will also provide the software installation file during the session. Certificate will be given.

Programme

Date: 13 & 14 June 2016
Time: 09:00 – 17:00
Venue: Training Room, Block T03, Level 2, University Industry Research Laboratory (UIRL), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, JOHOR, MALAYSIA

Trainer

Assoc. In 2002, the former HIT Lab US Research Associate completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington under the supervision of Professor Thomas Furness Ill and Professor Linda Shapiro. As part of the research for his thesis titled Shared Space: Exploration in Collaborative Augmented Reality, Dr Billinghurst invented the Magic Book - an animated children's book that comes to life when viewed through the lightweight head-mounted display (HMO). Not surprisingly, Professor Billinghurst has achieved several accolades in recent years for his contribution to Human Interface Technology research. He was awarded a Discover Magazine Award in 2001, for Entertainment for creating the Magic Book technology. He was selected as one of eight leading New Zealand innovators and entrepreneurs to be showcased at the Carter Holt Harvey New Zealand Innovation Pavilion at the America's Cup Village from November 2002 until March 2003.
