Rising Beyond Expectations, Lee Fang Qi’s Inspiring Journey

Rising Beyond Expectations, Lee Fang Qi’s Inspiring Journey

JOHOR BAHRU, 15 Nov. – “I was genuinely shocked when I received the call and email. I never once imagined I would be awarded the Chancellor’s Award,” said Lee Fang Qi, an outstanding Psychology graduate from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

Fang Qi’s educational journey began at SMK Taman Pelangi Indah, where her teachers first opened the door to opportunities she never knew were within reach. “I am truly grateful to my teachers there because they were the ones who introduced me to the UTM Foundation Programme,” she shared. Their guidance played a pivotal role in shaping her path, leading her to pursue the UTM Foundation Programme entirely online before securing her dream course in Psychology.

Like many students who entered university during the pandemic, Fang Qi faced an unexpected challenge; her entire first year unfolded behind a screen. “Although online classes were convenient, they weren’t the university experience I imagined,” she explained. The lack of physical interaction made her yearn for a vibrant campus life. Determined not to miss out once campus reopened, she promised herself that she would engage actively in university activities to make the most of her remaining years.

This promise became the catalyst for much of her personal and academic growth. Fang Qi immersed herself in programmes and initiatives that broadened her skills and strengthened her confidence. One of her most meaningful accomplishments was leading the Clean Our Plate 15.0 (COP 15.0) project, an initiative focused on raising awareness about food waste in society. “I am very proud of this project, especially because I received support from so many people while serving as the project director,” she said. Having previously served in the organising committee of COP 14.0, she credits both experiences for honing her leadership and communication skills outside the classroom.

Behind her success, Fang Qi acknowledges the unwavering support of her family. “My family has always provided guidance whenever I needed it. Some of my cousins are also UTM graduates, so I knew I wasn’t alone on this academic journey,” she reflected.

Yet, even with support, her journey was far from effortless. One of her greatest challenges was balancing academics, extracurricular commitments, family responsibilities, friendships, and personal well-being. As a psychology student, she paid close attention to her mental health. To stay grounded, she set boundaries, created detailed timetables, and prepared to-do lists to keep herself organised. “I also make sure to set aside time for myself, which helps me recharge and prevents burnout,” she shared.

When asked what she believes contributed most to her receiving the Chancellor’s Award, Fang Qi modestly credits the entirety of her university experience. “I never joined activities with the expectation of receiving an award. But I truly believe that everything I participated in has shaped me into the person I am today.”

Her advice to students striving for excellence carries the wisdom of someone who has grown deeply from her own journey. “Set clear and realistic goals. Once you have a goal, go for it wholeheartedly. No matter how difficult the journey becomes, you may rest, but don’t give up. Every obstacle you face is shaping you into a better version of yourself.”

To Lee Fang Qi: Your dedication, humility, and resilience embody the spirit of excellence that UTM is proud to uphold. May you continue inspiring others as you step forward into a bright future.
