Twin Chemical Engineers Graduate Together at UTM

JOHOR BAHRU, Nov 17 – “Not many people get to experience university life with their twin from start until graduation,” said Evon Kan Kuan Lam, who proudly completes her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (Bioprocess) alongside her twin sister, Eva Kan Kuan Yee, at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). For the twins, this convocation marks not only an academic achievement but also a deeply meaningful family celebration.

Evon and Eva have shared the same classroom journey since primary school, studying side by side all the way through SPM. Growing up in a single-parent household, their academic accomplishments today carry even greater significance. “My grandpa, father, uncles, aunties, and cousins played a big role in encouraging us all the way until university,” Evon shared. “Because of their support, and because we grew up studying together, this whole journey feels even more special.”

Choosing the same course came naturally for the twins. Although they took different subjects in STPM, both shared a strong interest in science and engineering. Their decision to pursue Chemical Engineering (Bioprocess) was shaped not only by their passion but also by how their strengths complemented each other. “Our different strengths actually helped us support each other throughout the course,” Evon explained.

Graduating together is a moment Evon describes as deeply meaningful. The twins weathered stressful assignments, long nights, and countless challenges side by side. “We went through stressful assignments, late nights, and happy moments together. Knowing that our family has been supporting us the whole time makes this moment feel even more memorable,” she said.

Among Evon’s most cherished memories is how having her twin eased her transition into university life. “When I first entered university, having my twin with me made me feel like I wasn’t alone,” she recalled. “Being in a new place can feel overwhelming, but having someone close to you right beside you really helps. She reduced at least half of my homesickness during the first few weeks.”

As they step into the next chapter of their lives, Evon and Eva look forward to exploring opportunities in the engineering field. While they may eventually take on different roles or work in different locations, their bond remains unshakeable. “We might end up in different roles or places, but we’ll still support each other just like always,” Evon affirmed.

For students who are studying alongside siblings or close friends, Evon has a heartfelt message: “Studying with someone close to you makes the journey more meaningful. Enjoy the process together, support each other through tough times, and make the most out of the experience.”

To Evon and Eva Kan Kuan Lam: Your shared journey is a celebration of resilience, unity, and family support. UTM congratulates you both on this remarkable achievement and wishes you continued success as you embark on your engineering careers.
