JOHOR BAHRU, Feb 26 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is expanding its global engagement through meaningful academic exchanges. Recently, Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Ramesh Zaidi Rozan from UTM was invited to present a session on “Ethical Innovation: Navigating Moral Dilemmas in Entrepreneurship” to students from Coventry University in the UK. This collaboration is part of the 4006ICTE Entrepreneurial Ideation Guest Sharing Session 2025, reflecting UTM’s commitment to fostering global discussions on responsible and sustainable innovation.

Ethical Innovation: Navigating Moral Dilemmas in Entrepreneurship

The session focused on the relationship between innovation and ethical decision-making, highlighting the importance for entrepreneurs to find a balance between profit, responsibility, and sustainability. Ethical considerations are essential for business success, as they influence customer trust, investor confidence, and corporate reputation.

Real-world case studies, like the Theranos scandal and the Volkswagen emissions fraud, were analyzed to demonstrate the serious consequences of unethical decision-making. The discussion also addressed the tension between disruptive innovation and ethical responsibility, referencing Joseph Schumpeter’s theory of Creative Destruction and Clayton Christensen’s concept of Disruptive Innovation.

Several decision-making frameworks have been introduced to assist entrepreneurs in navigating ethical challenges. The Triple Bottom Line model, which evaluates People, Planet, and Profit, was emphasized as a guiding principle for sustainable business practices. The 3-Question Test—which assesses whether a decision is legal, fair, and something to be proud of—was presented as a quick ethical check. Additionally, Stakeholder Mapping was discussed as a method to identify and consider the impacts of business decisions on various groups. These frameworks equip entrepreneurs with structured approaches to make responsible and sustainable choices.

Engaging Discussions with Coventry University Students

The session promoted active participation, with Coventry University students engaging in discussions about case studies and ethical dilemmas. One particularly thought-provoking scenario, “Mike’s Story,” challenged students to decide whether an individual should use an abandoned bus ticket to attend an important event. This prompted reflection on the conflict between personal ethics and societal standards.

Additionally, debates on ethical concerns related to AI, automation, data privacy, and sustainability enriched the discussion. Students thoughtfully considered the balance between technological advancement and moral responsibility.

Strengthening International Collaboration

This session emphasizes the significance of global academic partnerships in developing ethical entrepreneurs and responsible business leaders. Collaborating with Coventry University during the 4006ICTE Entrepreneurial Ideation Guest Sharing Session strengthens UTM’s commitment to promoting thought leadership in ethical innovation and entrepreneurship.
