UTM COMMUNITY RALLIES TO SUPPORT MEDICAL FRONTLINERS: ADHOC TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS 3D PRINTING FACE SHIELDS (UTMShield) AND FORMULATING HAND SANITIZERS
In a true spirit of us against the Covid-19 threat, multiple groups of supporting staff, students and researchers within the campus, were assembled for the call-of-duty; volunteering to assist the medical frontliners within the campus and also those from Hospital Sultanah Aminah nearby by providing two of the key essential item in fighting the virus; 3D printed face shields and hand sanitizers.
Within a span of two days, UTM manage to make full use of its some 48 of 3D printers around the campus, rallying them into printing face shields (excluding the visors). A true team working spririt were shown where students helped with the design and CAD drawing while researchers providing advise along the way. UTM spinoff company, BioPro Resources Sdn. Bhd., which is famous for its research-backed Dermags-line of beauty products, converted some of its operations to produce hand sanitizers. Upon knowing the initiatives, various researchers and laboratories within the campus sacrifice their ethanol solution and pass the inventories around to BioPro Resources to ensure maximum output.
First batch of the face shields and hand sanitizers were hand over by the DVC (Research & Innovation) himself to both the Director of Health Centre UTM and Hospital Sultanah Aminah. While we acknowledge that our contribution might be small in scale, we hoped that the effort help to win the war against Covid-19. We sincerely call for others to contribute as well.
