The study aims to unlock the potential of OTEC in Malaysia by assessing the technical feasibility of both conventional OTEC and hybrid-OTEC systems for an offshore plant. The study will also explore the economic understanding and environmental implications of OTEC development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is a renewable energy source that generates electricity from the thermal gradient between surface and deep seawater. Apart from generating baseload power, the OTEC plant can also diversify to produce fresh water and integrate deep seawater for marine cultures and other products. OTEC technology has the potential to address some global problems, including climate change, freshwater production, and food security that align with the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The collaboration between Shell-MRE and UTM OTEC combines innovation, research, and industry expertise. Both organizations have a shared vision to further develop OTEC.
