 Research Title : Development of a Spiral Finned Crystallizer for Progressive Freeze Concentration Process

 

 

Research Summary :

Concentration of solutions is one of the important processes in industries. Many efforts have been committed to develop improved methods for concentration process. Freeze Concentration (FC) is one of the systems, which crystallizes the water molecules of the solution out as ice crystal and retain the concentrated dyes in liquid form. FC is divided into Suspension Freeze Concentration (SFC) and Progressive Freeze Concentration (PFC). For SFC system, small ice crystals are formed as a suspension in the mother liquor, which needs subsequent separation from the mother liquor. The separating process is difficult to be handled and also brings in higher cost. PFC was then introduced as an alternative to the SFC method, in which only a single ice block/layer is formed as a sheet on a cooled surface, making the separation process much easier and at a lower cost. The design of the new PFC system, which is a new crystallizer with the spiral fin as the main part, provides maximum surface area to ease production of the product. The productivity will be increased with increasing surface area of contact between coolant and solution through the cooling plate. The spiral finned crystallizer will ensure optimal flow characteristics at the diffusion boundary layer on the ice surface. This new crystallizer will also be jacketed so that the heat transfer will be more efficient between the solution and coolant because of low thermal resistance. In this present research, the PFC system will be applied to a dye solution as a model liquid.
