UTM Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (UTM-CIAM) is established in December 2012 as a result of joint memorandum of understanding between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (OCIAM) through UTM Strategic Alliance. This establishment is to create collaboration between Universiti of Oxford of United Kingdom and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia through exchanging and transfer of idea, sharing expertise and sharing problem solving strategies.
Among the objective of this establishment is to expand the role of Malaysian mathematician especially in research and industrial problem solving, to improve the quality of scientific publication, create a base for Mathematics in Study Group (MISG) in Malaysia, promote problem solving through mathematical modeling and developing local capacity to become experts in the field of industrial and applied mathematics and directly play a relevant role with the industry.
This strategic networking also would increase the capacity of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia of becoming renowned center for industrial and applied mathematics in Malaysia and world in generally. By making OCIAM a strategic model to follow since OCIAM is a world known in centre industrial and applied mathematics, UTM-CIAM can follow the footstep to become Malaysian own entity in the field and able to produced renowned experts who not only excel in their field, and even becoming consultants to international organization.
