INSTeG’s New Team

Recently a group of INSTeG Students under the leadership of PhD Candidate Jaw Siow Wei organized a gathering for all INSTeG members. This opportunity was meant to take new group photos to produce attractive updates on our living website. “This is a great opportunity for new staff and students to get to know each other and exchange the latest news while having great food!”, Dr. Ab Latif Ibrahim mentioned during the evening at the Observatory of UTM. Dr. Latif is the most senior staff member of INSTeG since its creation in late 2003.

The students had initiated the potluck party. Everybody had brought delicious vegetarian food and cold drinks for a big buffet taken at the highest elevation on the UTM Campus. We had a great view over the entire region. After dinner Mohammed Izuan bin Nadzri took quite a number of very unconventional photographs. Out of this stock of photos we have now a good choice to fill our institute’s website and give an impression of our international team.

Lucky enough the incoming clouds kept their water inside until we left the place…

New Building

INSTeG has moved to a new location on the Campus of UTM. Since the beginning of April we are working in the new building of the Faculty of Geoinformation and Real Estate numbered T06. With the new building, nicely painted in yellow and blue (see picture) we had the opportunity to install new facilities like two big INSTeG-Research-Labs allocating space for the students working in our Projects, INSTeG-Lab (I-Lab) for Staff Research Data Processing and Innovation and the INSTeG-Auditorium (I-Auditorium) with a potential of hosting up to 40 participants in presentations, workshops, seminars and colloquia.

We are still in the process of setting up the operational infrastructure. A great advantage is the open office concept. All rooms have large windows so that we are able to implement a new communication and networking strategy. The contact amongst staff and between staff and project students can be improved tremendously. We are very much looking forward to new research inspiration and joint outcomes from by the new location.

Interested people are most welcome to visit us at our new premises. If you would like to have deeper insights please let us know in advance in order to be able to allocate appropriate time and resources for tour and explanations. You can email us at info@insteg.utm.my.

The 8th International Symposium on Digital Earth 2013 (ISDE 2013)

The ISDE Symposium, with the theme of “Transforming Knowledge into sustainable practise” is expected to attract some 1000 participants from all over the world.  This bi-annual event has previously been held in Perth Australia, Beijing, China, San Francisco, U.S.A.  It is the major Symposium about satellite and other Earth observation technologies and applications.

We have received 365 abstracts from scientists from 36 countries representing the work of their Universities, Companies, Research Institutions and International Organisations. Our 20 keynote speakers originate from Europe, USA, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

This Conference addresses scientists, decision-makers, politicians, private business and experts in the field of Digital Earth. “The Digital Earth is describing a virtual representation of the Earth that is georeferenced and connected to the world’s digital knowledge archives.” (concept first introduced in 1998 by Al Gore). “Digital Earth is a global initiative to construct a comprehensive virtual representation of the planet. It is a collaborative effort between Earth sciences, space sciences and information sciences to monitor and forecast natural and human phenomena.” (http://www.digitalearth-isde.org/).

In parallel to our diverse technical sessions we are running specialized workshops and special sessions on various topics (see our tentative program at http://www.isde2013kuching.com/programme.php). We were able to commit quite a number of well-known and respected experts in the fields of the 16 themes of the conference to attract many international participants.

In addition we are providing an exhibition space that is constantly filling up with companies, research institutes and international organizations exhibiting their state-of-the-art projects and products for Digital Earth. We were able to commit national and international companies (i.e. BSEI from China, SCANEX from Russia, ESRI from the US as well as government organizations such as KeTTHA – Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water Malaysia, ANGKASA – Malaysian Space Agency, etc.).

Also interesting to mention is the Youth Program:  International Student Paper Contest, Summer School for young scientists and researchers and Student Competition (see: http://www.isde2013kuching.com/youth.php). The ISDE8 Youth Program provides technical insight and training and enables networking for the professional future of students and young scientists.

The themes we are covering in this conference are;

  1. Digital Earth Vision & Innovation
  2. Earth Observation Technologies
  3. ICT Technologies including Spatial Data Infrastructure
  4. Empowering the Community, Engaging the Society
  5. Digital City & Green Cities
  6. Health & Biodiversity
  7. Digital Heritage
  8. Sustainability in the context of Digital Earth
  9. Geospatial Defense Intelligence
  10. Adapting to Global & Climate Changes
  11. Population Growth & Infrastructure Development
  12. Mining, Energy & Resource Development
  13. Natural Resource Management & Agriculture
  14. Early Warning, Emergency Management & National Security
  15. Land & Water Management
  16. Marine & Coastal Environment
  17. Natural Hazards & Pollution

We have a special session on “Transformation Towards a Sustainable Low Carbon Society (LCS)” with a panel of experts from around the world. The publisher Taylor & Francis in cooperation with Prof. Arthur Cracknell, an internationally recognized Professor from the University of Dundee, UK is providing a workshop on “Publishing and technical writing”. Very important and attractive input for researchers everywhere since they are measured nowadays on their technical output in terms of journal papers with impact! Digital City & Green Cities also gets special attention through the special session. Other hot topics are workshops on water security & management and converting research results into policy papers for decision makers.

Looking forward to meeting you in Kuching!
