The International STEM Symposium 2024, organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), was a resounding success. This program was held from July 14 to 18, 2024, in collaboration with Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), Universitas Lampung (Unila), and Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI). The symposium not only advanced innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education but also strengthened the ties between Malaysia and Indonesia. The exchange of ideas and knowledge throughout the event showcased the power of international cooperation in the field of education.

International Conference in Science and Mathematics Education (ICSME) 2024

The International Conference in Science and Mathematics Education (ICSME) 2024, under the leadership of Associate Professor Dr. Nor Hasniza binti Ibrahim, marked the beginning of the symposium on July 14-15. The theme of the conference was “Preparing Tomorrow’s STEM Educators: Building Foundations for Effective Teaching,” covering sub-themes such as Mathematics Education, Chemistry Education, Physics Education, and STEM Education. The ICSME was gathered approximately 100 participants, including academicians, scholars, and students at various levels, gathered to discuss current issues, recent developments, and significant trends in educational research.

Moreover, the keynote sessions featured distinguished speakers, who were Associate Professor Dr. Hartono from Unsri, Professor Dr. Hadi Suwono from UM, Associate Professor Dr. Setyorini from Unila, and Associate Professor Dr. Sharifah Osman from UTM. These sessions enriched participants’ knowledge, provided valuable insights, and shared cutting-edge information in the field of STEM education, inspiring educators to implement innovative teaching practices.

STEM Workshop 2024

On the 16th of July 2024, a STEM workshop was held at the Seminar Room (D06) in the FSSH. This event was organized for postgraduate students from Unsri, with Dr. Mohamad Ikram Zakaria and Dr. Chuzairy Hanri serving as the distinguished speakers. The workshop was divided into two sessions, each designed to provide participants with innovative strategies for designing and conducting research in the fields of science and mathematics.

The primary objective of this workshop was to equip educators and researchers with contemporary methodologies, tools, and techniques that are tailored to the disciplines of science and mathematics. By doing so, the workshop aimed to enhance both teaching and research outcomes. Participants were given the opportunity to explore and engage with new teaching approaches and research design methods, which are crucial for advancing their academic and professional endeavors.

The first session, titled “New Teaching Approaches for Educational Research,” took place from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm. This session began with a sharing segment where Dr. Chuzairy and Dr. Mohamad Ikram Zakaria introduced the Nominal Group Technique (NGT). This technique, which is used for group decision-making and problem-solving, was explained in detail, highlighting its relevance and application in educational research. Following the introduction, a simulation was conducted to demonstrate how NGT can be effectively used in research settings. Participants actively engaged in this simulation, gaining practical insights into the implementation of NGT. The session concluded with a comprehensive discussion, allowing participants to reflect on their learning and clarify any doubts.

After a lunch break, the second session, “Ideas in Designing Research in Science & Mathematics,” commenced at 2.00 pm and continued until 5.00 pm. Dr. Mohamad Ikram Zakaria led this session, starting with a sharing session on instructional design models. He provided an overview of various models, emphasizing their significance in developing effective educational programs. The session then moved into a hands-on simulation where participants learned how to use the ADDIE model and the design thinking process. These methodologies were applied in the context of developing STEM activities such as “Rocket STEM,” “Spinning Top,” “Paper Helicopter,” and “Parachute.” This practical approach allowed participants to understand the step-by-step process of instructional design and how it can be utilized to create engaging and educational STEM projects.

The feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many praised the workshop for enhancing their understanding of educational research, particularly in the context of designing new STEM teaching approaches. The hands-on activities were highlighted as a significant aspect of the workshop, as they provided practical experience and a deeper understanding of the NGT and instructional design models. Participants expressed their appreciation for the detailed simulations, which not only clarified theoretical concepts but also demonstrated their real-world applications.

In conclusion, the STEM workshop on 16th July 2024 was a resounding success. It achieved its objective of providing postgraduate students with innovative strategies for research and teaching in science and mathematics. The expertise of Dr. Mohamad Ikram Zakaria and Dr. Chuzairy Hanri, combined with the interactive and practical nature of the sessions, made this workshop a valuable learning experience for all participants.

International Innovation Competition in Education (IICE) 2024

On July 17, the International Innovation Competition in Education (IICE) 2024, led by Dr. Norulhuda binti Ismail offered a platform for educators and students to showcase their innovative teaching and learning projects. The IICE was organized by the Johor Science and Mathematics Education Association (PPSMJ) in collaboration with the School of Education, FSSH UTM. This competition saw a total of 26 participants, and provided participants with opportunities to exchange ideas, network with peers and experts, and stay abreast of current trends in education.

STEM Community Service

The symposium concluded on July 18 with a STEM Community Service event, a joint initiative by UTM and Unila at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Mutiara Rini, Johor Bahru. This event was led by Dr. Noorzana Khamis, which aimed to spark an interest in STEM among 30 students from the Science Stream class.

The delegation from Unila, consisting of esteemed lecturers Mr. Hermiyanzi, Dr. Sri Hastuti Noer, Dr. M. Setyarini, Dr. Viyanti, Madam Rini Rita Marpaung, and Madam Ana Mentari, played a significant role in this initiative. Notably, Dr. Setyarini actively conducted experiments and clearly explained the underlying scientific concepts, making the learning process engaging and effective. By employing a “learning by doing” approach, this activity ensured that students gained hands-on experience, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of STEM fields.

The day featured a series of engaging experiments and hands-on activities designed to inspire and captivate young minds. Students explored the wonders of STEM through interactive sessions, gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation for these fields. The community service event underscored the importance of outreach and collaboration in promoting STEM education, highlighting the role of international partnerships in enhancing educational experiences and broadening perspectives.

The International STEM Symposium 2024 successfully brought together educators, students, and experts from Malaysia and Indonesia, fostering innovation and strengthening relationships between the two countries. The exchange of knowledge and ideas throughout the symposium demonstrated the power of collaboration in advancing STEM education.
