by | Jul 29, 2024 | UTM NewsHub

In a remarkable display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, the School of Professional and Continuing Education (UTMSPACE), Johor Bahru and the Faculty of Management Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in collaboration with Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP) and CBH Recycle Sdn. Bhd., successfully organized a public drive-thru project for e-waste and used cooking oil recycling. Held on May 26, 2024, at the MBIP open parking area in Johor, this initiative aimed to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices within the local community. Despite facing technical and managerial challenges, effective collaboration and strategic planning resulted in significant community participation and successful recycling efforts.

The primary objective of the project was to educate the community on the importance of recycling e-waste and used cooking oil, as well as to provide a convenient and efficient method for disposal. Community members could easily drop off their recyclable items at the drive-thru event, where representatives from CBH Sdn. Bhd. and MBIP measured the collected waste in grams and kilograms, exchanging it for monetary compensation.

This program played a crucial role in transferring knowledge to the community, educating participants on sustainable waste management practices during the event. Not only did this initiative reduce the environmental hazards posed by improper disposal, but it also encouraged positive behavioral changes among participants.

The project also created a unique opportunity for empowerment, learning, and camaraderie. By organizing a special day centered on these values, stronger bonds were forged among participants. The collaboration with MBIP and CBH provided invaluable experiences, enhancing understanding of project management, teamwork, and community engagement.

The success of the E-Waste and Used Cooking Oil Recycling Drive can be attributed to the effective collaboration between UTM SPACE Johor Bahru, the Faculty of Management UTM, MBIP, and CBH Recycle Sdn. Bhd. Despite the challenges, strategic planning and teamwork ensured smooth execution of the event. The drive-thru format made it convenient for community members to participate, leading to significant engagement and involvement.

Educational efforts by the organizers played a pivotal role in the project’s success. By engaging directly with participants, awareness was increased, and sustainable waste management practices were encouraged.

The E-Waste and Used Cooking Oil Recycling Drive was a resounding success. It raised awareness, promoted sustainable practices within the community, and strengthened the bonds among participants. This project serves as a model for future initiatives aimed at combining education, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. By continuing to foster a culture of recycling and environmental responsibility, such initiatives pave the way for a healthier and more sustainable future.
