SHANGHAI, July 4 – A groundbreaking research project titled “UAV-Assisted Plant Disease Detection in Rock Melon Greenhouses” was honored with the Best SDG Impact Award at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, China. The project, led by Ts Dr. Norulhusna Ahmad, Ir Dr. Hazilah Mad Kaidi, Prof Dr. Norliza Mohd Noor, and Siti Nur Aisyah Mohd Robi from the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can help advance sustainable agricultural practices. The team’s research utilizes UAV technology to monitor and detect plant diseases in rock melon greenhouses, significantly improving early intervention and reducing crop loss.

This award acknowledges the project’s significant contribution to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting sustainable agriculture, enhancing food security, and fostering innovation. The use of AI-driven UAVs in plant disease detection offers a scalable solution to a critical challenge faced by farmers worldwide, demonstrating the intersection of technology and sustainability.

The project was funded under the NICT ASEAN-IVO PJ2022 Project on Agricultural IoT based on Edge Computing. “The funding we received has been crucial in supporting our research and development efforts to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability. We are honored to have been recognized at the WAIC,” said Ts Dr. Norulhusna Ahmad. Our goal is to equip farmers with advanced tools for healthier crops and more sustainable farming practices. Winning this award reflects our team’s hard work and commitment. Using AI and UAV technology opens up new possibilities for precision agriculture. Early disease detection helps us minimize the impact on crop yield and quality, ultimately contributing to food security and sustainable farming.”

“This project demonstrates how technological innovation can tackle global challenges. We hope this recognition encourages further research and collaboration in sustainable agriculture.”

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference is a leading global event that brings together top AI experts, researchers, and industry professionals to showcase the latest advancements and discuss the future of AI technology. The Best SDG Impact Award is one of the conference’s highest honors, recognizing projects that significantly contribute to achieving the SDGs.

This award showcases the potential of AI-driven solutions to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges. It emphasizes the importance of continued investment in innovative research and technology development.
