SKUDAI – The UTM Summer School TechnoXperience took place from July 29 to August 1, 2024. This event was a joint initiative involving Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the UTM Alumni Unit, the School of Undergraduate Studies, and the Kuala Kangsar District Education Office (PPD Kuala Kangsar). The program saw the participation of 96 students from Kuala Kangsar District schools, along with 16 teachers and 61 UTM researchers.

The main objective of the program was to establish UTM as the leading university choice for the Kuala Kangsar community and to encourage science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-focused students to consider UTM as their preferred institution. The program featured 21 learning modules, with two led by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE).

At FKE, 14 school students and 2 teachers were split into two groups. Group 1, comprising 7 students, engaged in the “STEM Operational Amplifiers with Non-Linear Applications” module. The facilitators for this group included Prof. Ir. Dr. Rubita binti Sudirman, Ts. Dr. Nurul Ezaila binti Alias, Ts. Dr. Mastura Shafinaz binti Zainal Abidin, Cik Hasya Azyyati Shazwani binti Hasbullah, En. Muhammad Fahmi bin Abdullah, Pn. Maizura binti Sudin, and Pn. Wan Nor Afiza binti Wan Hussain.

This module covered the characteristics and uses of Operational Amplifiers (Op-Amps), including designing, constructing, and analyzing Op-Amp circuits with a focus on comparator configurations. It provided a thorough understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of Op-Amp circuits through STEM principles.

Dr. Shahrin bin Md Ayob, Dr. Nur Faizal bin Kasri, Dr. Nur Dalilah binti Nordin, and Dr. Siti Mahfuza binti Saimon. Throughout the module, the group gained insights into the differences between conventional and electric vehicles. They also had the opportunity to visit the Proton Saga electric vehicle (EV) at UTM’s EV laboratory. In addition, the students learned about photovoltaic systems, conducted experiments, and explored the installation and data analysis of a simple photovoltaic system using Matlab-Simulink for system simulations.
