The 5th International Conference on Smart Sensors and Application 2024 (ICSSA 2024), held on 10-12 September 2024 at St. Giles Wembley Hotel, Penang Malaysia marked a significant milestone in the field of smart sensors and their diverse applications. Organized by the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) Malaysia Chapter, the conference successfully brought together a diverse group of academics, researchers, industry professionals, and students.
The primary goal of ICSSA 2024 was to foster collaboration between academia and industry to drive forward research and development in smart sensors and applications. The event provided a robust platform for participants to present their work, exchange ideas, and enhance their understanding of emerging technologies in this field.
The conference featured two distinguished keynote speakers. Prof. Ir. Dr. Nor Ashidi of USM delivered an insightful keynote address on Potential of You Only Look Once (YOLO) Networks for Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Component and Defect Detection. Later in the day, Prof. Dr. Mohsen Guizani of Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), United Arab Emirates (UAE), delivered his keynote speech via an online platform, contributing valuable perspectives on Machine Learning Wireless Network Applications in Smart Cities.
ICSSA 2024 received a total of 68 paper submissions from various countries, including Iraq, Japan, China, Egypt, United States, Vietnam, Indonesia, Finland, United Kingdom, Kenya, India, and Malaysia. After a rigorous review process, 38 papers (56%) were accepted and presented at ICSSA 2024. These papers are being considered for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, ensuring broad dissemination and recognition of the research presented.
ICSSA 2024 showcased an Industry Highlight by Ventura IoT Sdn. Bhd., presenting cutting-edge advancements in smart sensors particularly in the oil & gas industry, followed by a compelling invited speaker session by Dr. Uswah Khairuddin from Centre of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIRO) UTM on AI-driven pose estimation in healthcare. The second day featured an Industry Forum titled “Collaboration in Smart Sensors Shaping Intelligent Innovations,” featuring panels from three industry representatives. The third day, held at USM Main Campus, offered two workshops: one on “Embedded AI” and another addressing the ethics and practicalities of using artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT in thesis writing.
The success of ICSSA 2024 would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the conference committee members, advisors, speakers, industry panels, and reviewers. Special thanks are also due to our generous sponsors: Ventura IoT Sdn. Bhd., CAIRO, Pacton Technologies Sdn. Bhd., Sari Muhibbah Engineering Sdn. Bhd., and iFIBER Sdn. Bhd., whose support was instrumental in making this event a success.
With the theme “Shaping the Future of Intelligent Innovation, “ICSSA 2024 succeeded in sparking engaging discussions among researchers, speakers, and industry experts on a wide range of topics related to smart sensors and their applications. The conference provided an enriching experience for all participants, contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge and collaboration in this rapidly evolving field.
