Cultivating a love for Literature

In response to transform our school learners to be better readers, third year students of Bachelor of Science with Education (TESL) in  collaboration with Kolej Tun Razak student leaders organised a Literature Camp at SMK Dato Jaafar, Johor Bahru and SMK Dato’ Mohd Yunos Sulaiman, Pekan Nenas, Pontian.  LitCamp 2019 which was held on the 21st and 24th October aimed at creating an engaging educational experience for teens aged 15 and above in an interactive way. The camp was facilitated by the very energetic camp facilitators with full of different activities that gave the opportunity for students not only to practice English but also develop a love for literature in English. The facilitators went above and beyond to design warm and inviting learning environments, create team building activities and celebrate students’ learning. The activities ranged from stories, poems, creative writing and music. Instead of learning literature in a monotonous environment, the camp facilitators brought joy and fun into the pleasure of reading literature in a creative environment. The camp started with a group cheer and the writing of a Haiku poem to describe their groups. The participants were then asked to complete a puzzle by working on a variety of literary appreciation activities in 10 base stations. Overall, the Form Three students had amazing experience besides improving their language skills. This was indeed a golden opportunity for the camp facilitators as they gained experience working with the young learners and motivating them to build confidence and excitement for reading literary works.
