The ATU-NET Summer School Program, organized by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with the Asia Technology University Network (ATU-NET), successfully united international students from Southeast Asia for an innovative learning experience. The program, held from 25th to 28th August 2024, brought together 26 participants from countries such as Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. The primary objective was to explore the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with the cultural heritage of Johor, highlighting the potential of modern technology to preserve and enhance traditional practices.

Throughout the event, participants engaged in a variety of activities designed to foster creative thinking and cultural appreciation. Workshops on 3D printing and AI were complemented by lessons on the traditional art of batik canting, giving participants a unique opportunity to blend cutting-edge technology with cultural craftsmanship. These sessions were aimed at encouraging participants to think critically about the role of AI in cultural preservation, challenging them to develop projects that combine modern innovations with heritage elements.

In addition to hands-on technical work, the summer school also offered participants a deep dive into Johor’s rich cultural history. Visits to cultural landmarks, such as Johor Heritage Foundation (YWJ) and Pusat Kraf Johor, allowed students to explore traditional crafts and royal heritage.

The culmination of the program saw participants presenting their final projects, which integrated the knowledge they had gained throughout the event. Their work was evaluated by a panel of judges, with standout groups receiving the “Best 3D Project Group Award” and the “Best Video Report Creative Award.” The program ended with a sharing session, where participants reflected on their experiences, followed by a certificate ceremony to celebrate their accomplishments.

By bridging the gap between AI and cultural heritage, the ATU-NET Summer School Program succeeded in fostering innovation and cultural exchange among the youth, equipping them with both technical skills and a deeper appreciation for the preservation of traditions. The event provided an enriching platform for cross-cultural collaboration, enhancing participants’ global perspectives and intercultural competencies.
