SEOUL, Oct 18 – A delegation from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), spearheaded by the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI), embarked on a transformative benchmarking visit to South Korea from October 12–18, 2024. The week-long program included visits to five of Korea’s top-tier institutions: Seoul National University (SNU), Dongguk University (DGU), Chungnam National University (CNU), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Kyungpook National University (KNU).

The team, representing the FAI-UTM, was led by Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Shamsuri Khalid, accompanied by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nor Raihana Mohd Ali, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Nor Zairah Ab Rahim, Sr. Dr. Rozaimi Che Hasan, Dr. Fiza Abdul Rahim, and Dr. Basyarah Hamat. Additionally, the team included Ir. Ts. Mohammad ‘Afif Kasnon from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). This diverse team explored cutting-edge AI developments in Korea, gaining insights into multidisciplinary AI applications.

SNU showcased its “AI+X” framework, integrating AI into governance, healthcare, and creative industries, while DGU’s project-based learning model emphasized real-world industry collaborations. At CNU, the focus was on artificial intelligence (AI) convergence research, supported by substantial government funding. Meanwhile, KAIST presented advancements in smart mobility and robotics, and KNU highlighted its innovative undergraduate-to-postgraduate AI pathways.

As a result, UTM plans to strengthen ties through Letters of Intent (LoI) and Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with these institutions. Future collaborations will emphasize student and staff mobility programs, adjunct appointments, knowledge sharing sessions, and joint research initiatives. The visit marks a significant step for FAI-UTM in positioning Malaysia as a key player in the global AI arena.
