JOHOR BAHRU, Mar 14 — PhD students Wang Feng and Song Pengfei from Shandong University of Science and Technology (SDUST) recently completed a three-month academic exchange at the Geospatial Imaging and Information Research Group (Gi2RG) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). This exchange took place from December 15, 2024, to March 15, 2025, and focused on collaboration between PhD researchers, further advancing the student exchange program between UTM and SDUST.

The Gi2RG had a productive academic interaction with the SDUST students. Assoc. Prof. Sr Dr. Ami Hassan Md Din, the leader of Gi2RG, organized a welcome ceremony where he introduced the group’s team structure and major research directions, as well as guided tours of relevant laboratories. Over the next three months, Sr. Dr. Khairulnizam M. Idris will supervise Song Pengfei, while Sr. Dr. Abd Wahid Rasib will mentor Wang Feng. The two SDUST students concentrated on point cloud data processing and its applications. They presented their innovative work in this area, including advancements in multi-beam water column imaging and tunnel point cloud processing technology. They fully engaged in the dynamic research environment throughout the exchange, fostering collaboration and promoting knowledge sharing.

In addition to their academic activities, Wang and Song actively participated in cultural events organized by the group. At a social gathering hosted by Gi2RG, they enjoyed traditional Malaysian dishes such as nasi lemak and satay while building friendly relationships in a relaxed setting, experiencing the unique blend of different cultures.

A heartfelt farewell event organized by Gi2RG marked the conclusion of their visit, which was deemed highly successful. The professionalism and positive attitudes of both doctoral students left a lasting impression. Their research has also provided fresh perspectives to Gi2RG, and there is hope to expand the joint research and exchange program with SDUST in the future. Wang Feng and Song Pengfei expressed that UTM’s open research environment and support for international students helped them quickly adapt to life abroad and appreciate Malaysia’s multicultural charm. They look forward to further collaborations and exchanges moving forward.
