Structural Health Monitoring of Tunnel Lining
Researcher : Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Izni Syahrizal Ibrahim (iznisyahrizal@utm.my)
About this Research
- Tunnels are underground passages used for transportation and an attractive solution for railways, roadways, public utilities and telecommunications.
- In Malaysia, tunnels are used in traffic tunnels for highway and railway, diversion and pressure tunnels for water supply and hydropower tunnels for electricity generation.
- Regular monitoring and maintenance are very important to ensure the service life of the tunnels.
- The main aim of the research is therefore to develop a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system for tunnel lining and also to predict its remaining service life.
- The program is divided into four main projects comprising of visual inspection, prediction of service life, video-based image risk analysis for tunnel lining and safety and developing SHM system for real-time monitoring.
