Design of connection is an essential part in steel structures because it affects the fabrication economy, ease of erection and the design of members of the structures. In this course, the design of steel connection is based on the requirements of Eurocode 3. Comparison with BS 5950 will also be highlighted whenever necessary. The course covers beam to column connection, column splice and base plate in a building designed as a simple construction, in which the connections between members are assumed as incapable of transmitting moments. Simple connection is used in braced steel frames, i.e. the majority of steel structures other than portal frames and is generally considered as cheaper in fabrication, faster in erection and easier in design calculation. |
