Design of Cold Formed Steel Structures
Cold-formed steel sections (generally referred to as light gauge steel or light steel sections) are commonly used as secondary steelwork, e.g. roof purlins and wall cladding rails in industrial buildings. In recent years the application has emerged to primary load-bearing elements in light steel frames, such as roof trusses and framed walls. The nature of cold-formed steel is very different than that of hot-rolled steel sections, thus misunderstanding of such nature could lead to improper design and fatal construction accident. In Eurocode 3 Design of steel structures, design rules for cold-formed steel members are given in several separate Parts, notably BS EN 1993-1-1, BS EN 1993-1-3 and BS EN 1993-1-5, each together with their National Annex and other supplementary documents. The seminar helps the participants to understand the use of such references through worked examples.

About the Speaker:
Ir. Dr. Mohd Hanim Osman is a senior fellow at the Forensic Engineering Centre (FEC), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Skudai, Johor. Besides teaching, he was active in research and consultancies in specialized areas related to construction, in particular structural steel analysis, design, assessment, and structural failure investigation. He is also a senior fellow member of Civil Engineering Testing Unit (CETU), a laboratory with ISO 17025 accreditation. His current research interest is structural forensic engineering and building condition assessment. Dr. Mohd Hanim holds B.Eng.(Civil) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, M.Sc. (Structural Eng.) from University of Surrey,and Ph.D (Structural Eng.) from University of Wales at Cardiff, United Kingdom. He is a member of the Institute of Engineers Malaysia and a Professional Engineer with Board of Engineers Malaysia.
