Precast Concrete Design to Eurocode 2

Synopsis

The course covers the basic principles and consideration in the design for precast concrete structures. This includes components design (slabs, beams, columns etc.), non-composite & composite, horizontal diaphragm action, precast joints and connections. A hands-on exercise will also be given during the course including the application on precast concrete design in commercial design software package.

Aims & Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to understand the basic design concepts of precast concrete structures, joints & connections and construction based on MS EN 1992 (Eurocode 2) requirements.

Topics:

– Introduction to Precast Concrete Structures
– Precast Structural Building Systems

  • Types of precast concrete slabs, advantages and disadvantages, span limitation, suitable application for each precast slab type. Criteria for selecting precast concrete slabs
  • Types of precast concrete beams: full depth, half beam, rectangular, inverted T, band beam. Criteria for selection of precast concrete beam
– Design of Precast Concrete Floor Layout

  • Practical floor layout comprising layout of beams, slabs and corresponding column grids.
– Comparison of beam structural analysis between precast and cast-in-situ reinforced concrete structures
– Concept of designing precast concrete beams as non-composite and composite
– Precast Floor Diaphragm Action

  • Location of shear wall & Requirement of ties in Eurocode 2
– Design of Connections: Beam to Column Connection
– Design of Connections: Column to Foundation Connection
