Structural Fire Engineering

In fire loadings situation, engineers are signing off buildings daily saying that they comply with building code regulations but they may either be (a) totally under-designed in terms of fire resistance, or (b) totally over-designed, which wastes large amounts of money. Structural fire engineering is rapidly gaining momentum around the world. Therefore, this course is aim to provide a fundamental to structural fire engineering and how to apply this at design stage. This involves estimating the temperature in building compartment and the temperatures profile of individual structural members get exposed to as a function of time. This course perhaps gain intentions to structure engineers in early stage of design time then dealt with by the architects or fire engineers afterwards rather than the structural engineers getting involved on the building side. Therefore, building behavior during a fire is most certainly a topic that structural engineers should be addressing, as it forms part of the course scope.

Topics:

  • An introduction to structural fire engineering
  • Discussions regarding structural fire design and approaches (prescriptive and performance based approaches)
  • Structural fire, fire curves and heat transfer equations
  • Characterizing the behaviour of construction materials (concrete, steel, etc) at elevated temperatures
  • Load on structures
  • Member design at elevated temperatures
  • Expansion and restraint
  • Work examples

About the Speaker:

Dr. Mariyana Aida Ab Kadir is a senior lecturer at Faculty of Civil Engineering, UTM where she has been a faculty member since 2005. Dr. Mariyana obtained her B.Sc. (Hons) Civil Eng. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, M.Sc. (Eng) from University of Pavia, Italy and Ph.D from University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Her research interest includes behavior of structural at elevated temperature and earthquake loading. She is one of the members in the The Roorkee Frame Test and involved many consultancy works, structure testing subjected to fire.
