Global Water Security Symposium
Celebrating 70 years of water and environmental health research and teaching at Newcastle University
Frederick Douglass Centre, Newcastle University, Newcastle Helix
23 – 24 January 2020
The Hydrological Modelling Workshop and Global Security Symposium was held in Newcastle University on 20-21 Jan and 23-24 Jan 2020, respectively. The two-day interactive hydrological modelling workshop focused on physically-based hydrological modeling using SHETRAN as an application. This workshop was attended by participants from globally reputed institutions such as Newcastle University, UK; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia; Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, India; University of Leeds, UK; Makerere University, Uganda; Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia; Water and Land Resource Centre (WLRC), Ethiopia.
On the other hand, the global water security symposium combines keynotes by eminent speakers from industry and academia with lightning talks by participants and open forum discussions on key 21st century challenges for the global water sector.
On behalf of Malaysia Collaboratory under United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Water Security and Sustainable Development Hub (www.watersecurityhub.org), Dr. Zulfaqar Sa’adi participated in the workshop and symposium and gained an invaluable learning opportunity as early carrier researchers (ECRs) and the chance to strengthen our global network of young researchers who will support the delivery of this large research program over the next five years. The learning outcomes were to gain knowledge of the overall concepts and theory of physical-based hydrological modeling and to understand the assumptions and limitations of models in practical applications and decision-making.
