CENTEXS Sarawak EPU Meeting for Modernisation Project Discussions

Oct 30, 2024 | UTM NewsHub

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) had the privilege of joining a team from the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Sarawak on a productive visit to Kuching, focused on exploring innovative solutions for modernizing the iconic Sungai Sarawak *penambang*—the small ferry boats that transport passengers across the river.

Our team brought together experts from diverse organizations, including the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) and UTM, all united by a shared vision: enhancing the *penambang* experience through sustainable technology. Representatives from Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) and Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) also participated, contributing valuable perspectives to the project.

We were honored to have YB Dato’ Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, Chief Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, whose insights and support highlighted the significance of this initiative.

The meeting, chaired by Wan Jamaludin Wan Abdul Wahap, Head of the Project Planning and Coordination Division at EPU, facilitated a fruitful exchange of ideas. CENTEXS presented an exciting vision for an ecosystem of electric vehicle (EV) boat solutions, generating lively discussion and enthusiasm among all attendees.

To gain a deeper understanding of the current *penambang* operations, we visited various boat jetties in Kampung Boyan, Kampung Lintang, and Pangkalan Sapi. Interacting with the local *Pak Penambang* and observing their routines offered valuable insights into the challenges and possibilities for modernization. We also identified potential sites for recharging stations, a crucial element in the proposed solution.

This visit marks a significant step towards realizing a sustainable and modernized Sungai Sarawak. UTM is excited to continue collaborating with all stakeholders to bring this vision to life.
