JOHOR BAHRU – Self-Expression Through Poetry Writing is an inspiring community engagement project led by Dr. Faraha Hamidi of Language Academy at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The project, supported by the Knowledge Transfer Programme – KTP@Faculty 2024 grant from the UTM Centre for Community and Industry Network (CCIN), involved students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Mutiara Rini. The project aimed to encourage the students to use poetry as a medium for creative self-expression.
Two of the four modules focusing on writing and illustrating poetry were completed in August 2024. The third module was designed to help students transform their written poems into creative artwork. Atiqa Shaharuddin conducted the activities with assistance from team members Dr. Nurhidaya Mohd. Sharif, Dr. Ungku Khairunnisa Ungku Mohd. Nordin and Dr. Hema Rosyeni Mustafa from Language Academy, UTM. The students were given various materials, such as air clay, watercolours, glitters, coloured papers, and tassels, to interpret their poems artistically.
By the end of the session, numerous creative pieces were produced, including a 3D motorbike with air clay tyres, soft-coloured paintings of flower petals, and abstract artwork featuring vibrant colours and glitter.
The session ended positively, with most students satisfied with their artwork. These pieces will be displayed at the upcoming school poetry recital competition.
The project offers students a safe platform to express their thoughts and emotions, especially during adolescence. It will culminate in the release of a zine featuring the students’ poems and illustrations, expected to be published by the end of 2024 or early 2025.
While the project was intended to inspire students, the team was inspired by their creativity and artistic expression.
