Hi-REd Roselle Spread: A UTM Innovation for Diabetic Wellness

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 8 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has developed Hi-REd Roselle Spread, a functional food innovation designed to support diabetic wellness. The product, created after more than a decade of research, carries the tagline: “Less Sweetness, More Wellness.”

Developed by Ts. Dr. Siti Pauliena Mohd Bohari from the Faculty of Science’s Department of Biosciences, this innovative spread was made possible through funding from the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) via the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS). The result? A product that is not only rich in flavor but also rooted in scientific validation and Malaysian agriculture.

Hi-REd Roselle Spread is made from 100% locally grown roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) sourced from Johor and Pahang. Thoughtfully formulated with less refined sugar, it is rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C. Made with halal ingredients and compliant with Food Safety is the Responsibility of the Industry (MeSTI) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, this nutritious spread is developed in collaboration with Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) to ensure strict quality control and a reliable supply chain.

“We set out to create a product that serves the diabetic community without compromising on taste. This isn’t just food spread it’s a lifestyle choice rooted in wellness,” said Dr. Pauliena.

What started as a lab-based exploration of roselle’s anti-diabetic potential is now a patented (Patent No: MY-193036-A) success story of UTM’s translational research ecosystem. The product exemplifies how Malaysian research can address global health concerns while empowering local farmers, halal-certified food producers, and sustainable food innovators.

Beyond its nutritional value, Hi-REd represents UTM’s broader mission: to drive national progress through innovations that improve lives. It is a powerful symbol of how science and community can intersect on your breakfast table.
