GEDONG, Feb 22 – Kembara Razak ke Desa Sarawak 2025 – Berambeh Rah Gedong 2025 (KERAKED’25) was a signature annual program organized by the Jawatankuasa Kolej Pelajar (JKP) of Kolej Tun Razak (KTR), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The event took place in Kampung Gedong, Gedong, Sarawak, from February 18 to February 22, 2025. This initiative was co-organized with UTM International and iCATS University College, Kuching.

The program aimed to cultivate leadership skills and promote community engagement among students through various volunteer activities. A total of 39 students participated, including 29 local Malaysian students and 10 international students. KERAKED’25 was designed with several key objectives in mind. It aims to develop students’ integrity and leadership qualities through volunteerism while providing a platform for them to establish collaborative networks involving both the government and private sectors in Malaysia. Additionally, the program nurtures interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as well as Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) among school students, as outlined by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). By empowering students through high-impact programs in a synergistic and conducive environment, KERAKED’25 seeks to produce proactive, focused, and forward-thinking individuals.

The program featured a variety of activities aimed at benefiting both the participants and the local community of Kampung Gedong. One key activity was the Family Adoption Program, which paired students with local families, fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Twenty-nine families from various villages within the Gedong Proper Zone actively participated in this initiative.

Engagement activities for students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Gedong included academic inspiration sessions and hands-on projects, such as hydroponic planting and DIY water filtration systems. Additionally, ITGeeks, a company owned by Aman Jamadi—a UTM and KTR alumnus—sponsored 14 units of Chromebooks donated to the school, enhancing students’ access to technology and digital learning resources.

Community service activities included gotong-royong (communal work), rewang (cooking sessions together), and traditional games with the villagers. Sports activities such as street soccer and friendly pétanque matches were organized to promote a healthy lifestyle and establish good relationships with the community.

The Fertigation Course offered by i-CATS College University was well-received, with community members participating enthusiastically. Through practical demonstrations and expert guidance, they gained valuable knowledge about fertigation techniques, enabling them to apply these methods in their agricultural endeavors.

During a business workshop, Abdur Rahman Abdul Rahim, a prominent figure in the local business community, shared his personal experiences, challenges, and successes, providing valuable insights and practical advice. This workshop was both a learning experience and a networking opportunity, allowing participants to connect with like-minded individuals and potential mentors.

Health check-ups for villagers were conducted in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Teaching Hospital. A cultural night featuring performances by UTM, i-CATS College University, and the local community enhanced cultural appreciation and unity.

The Gather & Grow: UTM Sarawak Alumni Meet was a memorable event attended by three successful UTM alumni residing in Sarawak. This gathering provided a platform for alumni to reconnect, share experiences, and inspire current students. Nikk Adam Abdillah Kipalli, Ikeram Yan, and Damien Anak Mikeng shared their journeys, highlighting their achievements and the positive impact of their education at UTM on their careers. The event fostered a sense of community and pride among attendees, celebrating the successes of UTM graduates in Sarawak.

The Student Leaders Discourse, Exchange of Collegiate Excellence in Leadership (ExCEL), between JKP KTR, UTM, and the Students’ Representative Council (MPP) of i-CATS College University is a collaborative initiative aimed at enhancing leadership skills and sharing best practices among student leaders. It includes discussions on leadership challenges, student welfare, and successful programs, as well as sharing effective leadership structures and communication strategies. This program helps student leaders from both institutions learn from each other, improve their leadership capabilities, and enhance the overall student experience.

The community of Kampung Gedong experienced improvements in health and well-being, quality education, and a reduction in inequalities. In the industry sector, a partnership with ITGeeks resulted in the sponsorship of 14 Chromebooks for community activities, and the involvement of Abdur Rahman Abdul Rahim, a prominent figure in the local business community, further enriched the program.

The program is aligned with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It promoted good health and well-being (SDG 3) through health check-ups and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, it supported quality education (SDG 4) through STEM and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) activities. The program also aimed to reduce inequalities (SDG 10) by ensuring equal opportunities for the Kampung Gedong community.

Students benefitted from the KERAKED’25 program in several meaningful ways. The program provided opportunities for leadership development, allowing students to take on leadership roles, manage activities, and collaborate with various stakeholders, thereby developing essential leadership and organizational skills.

Through participation in the Family Adoption Program and engagement with the local community, students experienced cultural exchange and gained a deeper understanding of Malaysia’s diverse cultural landscape, fostering mutual respect and appreciation.

Additionally, through activities such as gotong-royong (communal work), health check-ups, and educational sessions, students positively contributed to the community and understood the importance of volunteerism and social responsibility.

The program included STEM and TVET activities aimed at school students, enabling university students to share their knowledge with younger generations. It simultaneously reinforced their understanding of these subjects and the value of quality education.

Students also interacted with peers from different universities, government officials, and industry partners, building valuable networks that could benefit their future careers.

Lastly, the diverse range of activities and the immersive experience in a different environment contributed to the students’ personal growth, making them more adaptable, empathetic, and proactive.

The total estimated cost of the program was RM 45,000, with funding sourced from various entities, including KTR, the Department of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students Affairs and Alumni) (JTNCHEPA), UTM International, UTM Alumni, iCATS University College, and several other sponsors.

KERAKED’25 was a well-rounded program that successfully achieved its objectives of fostering leadership, community engagement, and cultural exchange. The collaboration between UTM, UTM International, and iCATS University College, along with the active participation of students and the local community, made this program a resounding success.

The positive impact on the participants and the Kampung Gedong community highlights the importance of such initiatives in promoting holistic education and societal well-being. Furthermore, the participation of international students in this program supports UTM’s Internationalisation at Home initiative. Overall, KERAKED’25 provided a holistic learning experience beyond the classroom, equipping students with skills and experiences that will serve them well in their future endeavors.
