GANGWON, Dec 2 – We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the CCUS Innovation & Research Seminar, a landmark collaborative event between Kangwon National University (KNU) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Held on December 2, 2025, the seminar brought together faculty members, researchers and students from both esteemed institutions to share cutting-edge research and foster deeper academic ties, particularly within engineering and sustainable development.

A delegation from the UTM Construction Research Centre (UTM CRC) led by Deputy Director Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Shek Poi Ngian and fellow researchers participated in the CCUS Innovation & Research Seminar held at KNU, Gangwon State, South Korea. The seminar focused on advancing knowledge and collaboration in Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Capture, Transport, Utilization, Conversion, Storage, Monitoring, Policy, and Technology Management (CCUS)—a critical domain supporting global decarbonisation and sustainable development.
Hosted by KNU, the event was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lim Seungmin, Associate Prof. Dr. Lee Bong Seop, and Prof. Dr. Wang Xiao Yong, who welcomed the UTM CRC delegation and facilitated technical exchanges throughout the programmed.

The seminar featured research presentations by both KNU lecturers and students as well as representatives from UTM CRC, providing a comprehensive platform for sharing advancements and exploring interdisciplinary opportunities in CCUS technologies.

The session fostered engaging discussions, highlighting the strong complementarity between KNU’s ongoing CCUS initiatives and UTM CRC’s research direction in sustainable and low-carbon construction materials.
“This seminar is a testament to the powerful synergy that emerges when distinct academic cultures—Korea and Malaysia—come together to pursue shared goals in innovation and research,” said Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Shek. “We are laying the foundation for long-term joint projects that will benefit our students and contribute significantly to global academic progress.”
The event provided strong networking opportunities, where attendees engaged in meaningful discussions and built connections for future collaborative research papers, student exchanges, and joint grant applications.
It also highlighted the impressive talent from both KNU and UTM, showcasing the strength of their research programmes and their shared commitment to excellence and forward-looking innovation.
Following the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lim Seungmin guided the UTM CRC delegation on a visit to KNU’s high-tech CCUS facility, featuring advanced laboratories equipped for carbon capture experiments, mineral carbonation research, material-based CO₂ storage, and pilot-scale testing systems. The visit provided valuable exposure to Korea’s latest experimental infrastructure supporting large-scale decarbonisation efforts.

The programmed concluded with a networking lunch session, offering an informal yet productive environment for deepening research ties, discussing future collaboration opportunities, and strengthening institutional partnerships between UTM CRC and KNU.
This event marks an important milestone in expanding UTM CRC’s international collaboration in CCUS research and contributes to the centre’s commitment to advancing sustainable and low-carbon technologies on a global platform.
The successful seminar marks an exciting new chapter in the KNU-UTM partnership, promising a future of joint innovation and impactful academic contribution. We look forward to the tangible research outcomes that will emerge from the seeds planted at this event.
