Landscape Students Boost Skills in FYP Technical Visit & Workshop

‘Industry and Academic Exposure Enhances Final-Year Project Learning Experience’

KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 28 – A total of 48 final-year students from the Landscape Architecture programme at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), comprising 37 students from mainstream programme and 11 sudents from UTM School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE), participated in an intensive technical visit and joint workshop held from 24 to 28 April 2025.

The event, as part of their Final Year Project (FYP) brainstorming program, provided hands-on industry experience, professional insights from practitioners, as well as valuable peer knowledge exchange. Organized by mainstream dan SPACE final year studiomasters, Dr. Teoh Mei Yee (FYP coordinator), LAr. Noraishah Latif, Dr. Rohana Mohd Firdaus and Dr. Mohd Ruzaini Che Zahari, allowed students to observe real-world applications of landscape design principles, interact with industry experts, and explore sustainable landscape solutions in the field. Through site visits and interactive sessions, participants strengthened their technical skills while bridging the gap between academic theory and practical implementation.

The brainstorming program covered a series of site visits, discussions, lecture inputs and peer knowledge exchange activities, as follows:

FYP Technical Visit & Workshop Itinerary

On 25th April, the Site Studies Day featured two technical visits. The first was to Mangrove Point, guided by Clouston Design Studio, a consultant for the site. The second visit took place at TRX City’s Strategic Marketing & Communications Department, along with consultants from Landart and Pentago Malaysia.

On Industry Immersion and Braimstorming Day (April 26), participants took a factory tour of Conspec Resources and engaged in a peer brainstorming session with technical input at UTM Kuala Lumpur.

The Brainstorming and Professional Development Day on 27 April, featured an expert-led brainstorming session at UTM Kuala Lumpur, with nine facilitators invited from Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia-ILAM Youth Chapter (IYC), and a professional discourse by LAr. Hj. Murzuki on “Building Liveable Townships: a landscape-focused approach.”

The final day, Site Studies and Collaborative Learning Day on April 28, included technical visit to Sime Darby Bandar Bukit Raja Townpark, gudided by its manager and Hashim Design & Associate (consultant), followed by a joint networking and exchange workshop with the Landscape Architecture programme at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Puncak Alam.

This intensive four-day program provided UTM’s final-year Landscape Architecture students with invaluable industrial and academic exposure, bridging academic theory with real-world practice. Students praised the experience, noting its value in refining their FYPs and expanding their knowledge and insights. Such initiatives underscore UTM’s commitment to producing adaptable, industry-ready graduates equipped to address Malaysia’s evolving landscape challenges. The department looks forward to expanding these impactful industry-academia partnerships in future programmes.
