KUCHING, Feb 27 – Today marks a historic milestone for Sarawak’s aerospace ambitions. The Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, the Premier of Sarawak, officiated the launch of the Aerospace Academy, reinforcing the state’s vision to position itself as a leading player in the rocketry industry. With its strategic location near the equator, Sarawak is poised to become the preferred launch site for aerospace ventures, as emphasized by Datuk Seri Utama Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry of Malaysia. This bold initiative will not only put Sarawak on the global map but will also initiate a new era of economic growth and technological advancement.

A symbol of ambition now stands tall at the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) in Kuching—a 1:10 scale model of the legendary Saturn V rocket. This impressive model, reaching over 10 meters in height, was proudly presented by Associate Professor Dr. Shukur Abu Hassan, advisor to CENTEXS. Positioned outside the administration office, it serves as a beacon of inspiration for young Sarawakians, encouraging them to dream big and pursue careers in the aerospace industry. As envisioned by the Premier, Sarawak aims to be not only a launchpad for rockets but also a launchpad for talent, innovation, and new career opportunities.
The event also facilitated the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Penambang project. This MoU formalizes a strategic collaboration between CENTEXS, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), Sarawak River Board (SRB), Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), and Bintulu Port. Together, they aim to promote sustainable maritime innovation and green mobility in Sarawak.
The project focuses on the electrification of traditional river transport (e-Penambang) for a Sustainable Sungai Sarawak. It aims to combine heritage preservation with green innovation by replacing wooden boats with lightweight Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyester (GFRP) vessels that are equipped with electric propulsion systems, enhancing boat safety and stability. As part of Kuching North City Hall’s (DBKU’s) Green Mobility initiative, this partnership envisions a cleaner and more advanced future for Sarawak’s transportation sector.

The expansion of the aerospace industry in Sarawak is expected to create a high demand for a skilled workforce, particularly in specialized fields such as computer numerical control (CNC) machining, rocket maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and ground operations. These emerging industries will generate numerous job opportunities, transforming Sarawak into a hub for aerospace technology and technical expertise. As the sectors align with this vision, institutions like CENTEXS are positioned to play a crucial role in upskilling the local workforce, ensuring they are prepared to meet the needs of these high-tech industries.
This ambitious endeavor is supported by the dedication and collaboration of various key players. For example, the Saturn V replica project is a testament to the hard work of Mokhlas Engineering, the Center for Advanced Composite Materials (CACM), and Abang Awang Merdeka, who have tirelessly worked to bring this vision to life. Their efforts reflect the spirit of Sarawak—bold, resilient, and always reaching for the stars. With such commitment, Sarawak is well on its way to becoming the next frontier in regional aerospace development.
As the engines of progress ignite, the people of Sarawak can take pride in this bold leap into the aerospace sector. After all, who would have thought that a state known for its rainforests and rivers would soon be recognized for rockets and launchpads? Just as Sarawakians say, “Ketik jak ke langit!”—let’s launch straight into the sky!
