KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 – The Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society Malaysia Chapter, has officially launched the 1st IEEE International Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Innovation (AI-SI 2025). The event, held at the Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, underscores Malaysia’s commitment to advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a driver of sustainable development, bringing together stakeholders from government, academia, industry, and the global community.
The Opening Ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Datuk Profesor Dr. Azlinda Azman, Director General of Higher Education Malaysia. The ceremony began with a Welcoming Speech by YBrs. Prof. Ts. Dr. Ali Selamat, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), UTM. Also present were Prof. Ts. Dr. Shamsul Sahibuddin, performing the function of Pro-Vice-Chancellor, UTM Kuala Lumpur Campus; Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Naz’ri Mahrin, Dean of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence; and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Noor Azurati Ahmad @ Salleh, Conference Chair of AI-SI 2025.
AI-SI 2025 serves as a platform to explore how AI can accelerate sustainable innovation, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, showcase practical applications that optimise resources, and address the ethical and societal implications of AI adoption.
One of the key highlights of AI-SI 2025 was the diverse range of knowledge sharing and global participation. The conference featured 52 research papers from 17 countries, alongside two keynote addresses delivered by Prof Chang D. Yoo from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Korea and Prof. Lam Kwok Yan from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. An Industry Forum also brought together leading organisations, including Mesolitica Sdn. Bhd., Telekom Malaysia Berhad, and Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIRO) UTM, to discuss the role of AI in addressing real-world challenges.
Adding further depth, the conference was organised into five thematic tracks: AI for Industry & Smart Systems. Green Computing & Sustainability, Policy & Governance of AI, AI for Resource Optimisation & Circular Economy, and Collaborative & Scalable AI for Global Partnerships. Participants also benefited from five specialised workshops led by renowned institutions and industry players, covering topics such as edge intelligence, workplace innovation, generative AI, digital trust, and applied AI for sustainable innovation.
The three-day conference, held from 26 to 28 August 2025, marked a historic milestone for FAI and UTM as its first international conference dedicated exclusively to AI. With its focused agenda on AI-driven sustainability, AI-SI 2025 establishes a foundation for future editions that will continue to position UTM at the forefront of AI research and innovation, while reinforcing Malaysia’s role in shaping the global AI ecosystem.
