KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 – The Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), together with students and lecturers from Universitas Krisnadwipayana (UNKRIS), Indonesia, collaborated on an international community service program at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Keramat Wangsa. Known as pengabdian masyarakat in Indonesian universities, community service is one of three key pillars alongside teaching and research.

This initiative aimed to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application through a hands-on workshop on Internet of Things (IoT) technology, using the micro:bit embedded hardware platform designed for secondary school students.

UTM lecturers Dr. Azizul Azizan, Dr. Mohd Shahrizal Rusli, and Dr. Yusnaidi Md Yusof facilitated the sessions, sharing their expertise on micro:bit microcontrollers and guiding students in integrating sensors and devices into simple IoT applications. The workshop introduced embedded systems concepts, emphasizing computing and coding skills. Using the MakeCode online platform, students programmed the micro:bit hardware, enabling interactive input-output functionalities.

Eight UNKRIS students—most from non-computer science or engineering backgrounds—presented IoT projects to Form 3 students, including temperature sensors and automated lighting systems. Drawing from their previous hands-on micro:bit IoT workshop at UTM Kuala Lumpur, they guided secondary school students in building basic microcontroller devices. The practical coding session demonstrated sensor and actuator integration, offering students hands-on experience with physical computing.

This engaging half-day workshop allowed UNKRIS participants to both teach and interact with local students while highlighting the growing role of IoT technology in daily life. The event underscored the importance of practical learning and introduced embedded systems concepts crucial to IoT devices, leaving a lasting impact on both UNKRIS and SMK Keramat Wangsa students.
