JOHOR BAHRU, Mar 12 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and the Academy of Bioelectric Meridian Massage Australia (ABMMA) have embarked on a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing academic development and industrial training in sports science and technology. This partnership, which involves the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Technology (FEST) at UTM and the lecturers from the Sports Science Panel, seeks to establish a professional training platform and broaden research networks in related fields.

One of the main topics discussed was the Collaboration Framework, where both institutions considered establishing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) or Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to solidify their long-term cooperation. The meeting also highlighted potential collaborative research proposals, particularly focusing on clinical trials and research initiatives related to Bioelectric Meridian Therapy (BMT).

As part of this collaboration, ABMMA proposed creating a BMT Lab at UTM, offering practical training for Sports Science students and providing BMT therapy services for athletes. Additionally, the partnership will include an Industrial Internship Program, allowing Sports Science students to participate in a 10-week training program with ABMMA from July 28 to October 3, 2025.

A five-year strategic plan has been developed to enhance collaboration between the parties involved. In the first year, the primary focus will be implementing BMT training and industrial training programs for undergraduate students at the Sports Science Laboratory. In the second year, both parties aim to expand research projects and promote participation in international conferences. The third year will concentrate on producing academic publications and establishing a dedicated research laboratory for the second group of industrial training students. During the fourth year, the emphasis will be on workforce development. This will include preparing students for employment through specialized training, establishing a rehabilitation clinic, and introducing a structured monthly training module. Finally, in the fifth year, ABMMA will assist FEST UTM in enhancing its role as a Training of Trainers (ToT) center, which will provide professional development for UTM staff and integrate sports therapy consultancy.
