JOHOR BAHRU, 12 December 2023 | A Professional Career Talk promoting surveying professions was jointly organized by RISM Johor Branch and the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). This annual program, co-hosted by FABU, UTM, and RISM Johor Branch, specifically targeted first-year students from the surveying programs in Geomatics & Land Surveying (GLS), Quantity Surveying (QS), and Property Surveying (PS).
The RISM Professional Career Talk 2023 was officiated by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zaly Shah Muhammad Hussein, Deputy Dean (Research Development & Innovation) of FABU, UTM. With the support of four student associations—PEMETA, GEOINFO, QSBINA, and PEHARTA—the event attracted more than 120 first-year students from Geomatics Engineering, Geoinformatics, Quantity Surveying, and Real Estate. In his opening remarks, the Deputy Dean expressed gratitude to the lecturers and students for accepting the invitation and encouraged all students to actively engage with the distinguished speakers, ask questions, and foster meaningful connections with fellow professionals
The event commenced with a welcoming speech by Sr. Tan Pei Ling, Vice Chair of RISM Johor Branch, providing an overview of RISM and sharing the branch’s activities throughout the years with the students. Subsequently, UTM students gained valuable insights and information on preparing for a career in surveying from three professional and licensed practitioners—Sr. Ezam Ariffin (GLS), Sr. Kok Chin Yee (PS), and Sr. Alice Tay Lee Yong (QS). The speakers shared their passion for their career paths, bridging the gap between theory and practice in surveying. Real-life examples and experiences provided students with a tangible connection to what is taught in the classroom. The event aimed to serve as a source of inspiration, guidance, and motivation as students collectively strive for excellence in the noble field of surveying.
Before the session concluded, Sr. Dr. Kelvin Tang Kang Wee, a Senior Lecturer at FABU and Committee Member of RISM Johor Branch, briefed the students on RISM Membership and RISM Scholarship & Education Fund. All surveying students from FABU were encouraged to join RISM, granting them eligibility to apply for scholarships and education funds during their undergraduate study.
The program, lasting for two and a half hours, was a resounding success. Special thanks were extended to all FABU lecturers, course coordinators, student association advisors, and committee members from PEMETA, GEOINFO, QSBINA, and PEHARTA for their cooperation and support in making the event a success. This program exemplifies the faculty’s synergetic collaboration with professional surveying institutions and industries, serving as a medium to empower faculty staff members and students to not only organize events but also expand their networking with surveying industry partners. See you next time, and all the best to all our Future Surveyors!
