JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 29 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has proudly hosted the 14th CAMPUS Asia Plus (CA+) Energy, Environment, Science and Technology (EEST) Summer School, marking a milestone as the first time UTM has taken the lead since joining the prestigious CAMPUS Asia Plus consortium in 2022. The two-week program welcomed 153 delegates, comprising 73 faculty members and 80 students from four leading Asian universities: UTM (Malaysia), Kyushu University (Japan), Pusan National University (South Korea), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).
Carrying the identity “4 Universities. 4 Colours. 1 Mission. Friendship · Passion · Collaboration,” the summer school captured the spirit of cross-border unity. Participants worked hand-in-hand, breaking cultural and linguistic barriers while deepening their expertise in energy, environment, science, and technology. The program blended thought-provoking lectures, interactive laboratory sessions, and research presentations. Distinguished professors from the four universities delivered academic lectures that sparked critical discussions on global sustainability and technological innovation, while students collaborated in eight interactive lab sessions, working in multinational teams and concluding with research pitches to present innovative findings and proposals.
Learning extended beyond the classroom as participants explored the mangrove ecosystem at Tanjung Piai National Park and visited the Southernmost Tip of Mainland Asia. They also experienced the scale of Princeton Digital Group’s AI-ready Data Centre in Sedenak and gained insights into Malaysia’s energy sector at the Malakoff Tanjung Bin Power Plant. Cultural immersion further enriched the experience, with the Johor Bahru Culture Tour featuring the Zero Kilometer landmark, Heritage Street, and Johor Craft Complex, where participants discovered the fusion of tradition and modernity in Malaysia’s heritage. A highlight of the program was the Kyushu University Forum – KYUDAI NOW @ Johor Bahru, which strengthened academic and alumni ties between Malaysia and Japan.
Participants described the summer school as transformative, where knowledge, friendships, and cultural understanding converged. “This program gave us not only academic insights but also a family across four nations,” shared one student participant. UTM Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the initiative reflects UTM’s commitment to global partnerships and its mission to nurture future-ready graduates capable of contributing to sustainable development across Asia and beyond.
The success of the program was made possible by the strong support of institutional and industry partners, including UTM, School of Graduate Studies (SPS UTM), PDG, Malakoff Corporation Berhad, Azuarina Creative Sdn. Bhd., Johor National Parks, and Tourism Johor. It was further strengthened by the involvement of the Kyushu University Asia and Oceania Studies Education Organization (Q-AOS), Malaysia Kyushu University Alumni Association (MYKYUDAI), Pusan National University’s Education & Research Center for Infrastructure of Smart Ocean City (ISOC), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Brain Korea 21 Education and Research Centre for Advanced Machinery and Materials. UTM extends heartfelt appreciation to all partners, sponsors, and participants for their unwavering support in making the program a resounding success.
With UTM’s debut as host, the 14th CAMPUS Asia Plus EEST Summer School marks a turning point in Malaysia’s contribution to the consortium. Its unique blend of academic rigor, industrial exposure, and cultural exchangecontinues to inspire the next generation of researchers, innovators, and global leaders.
