UTM International Students Embark on Transformative Journey to Royal Belum Rainforest

December 13-16, 2024 | Royal Belum Rainforest, Perak

GERIK, Dec 16 – International students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur experienced a life-changing adventure during the EduTourism Experience @ Royal Belum Rainforest 2024 from December 13 to 16. The 3-day, 2-night journey offered students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Malaysia’s breathtaking natural landscapes, engage with indigenous culture, and reflect on valuable lessons in leadership and resilience.

The adventure began with a long but scenic overnight bus ride from Menara Razak, UTM Kuala Lumpur, to Pulau Banding Jetty in Perak. Along the way, the group encountered a magical moment when a troupe of elephants crossed the East-West Highway under the moonlit sky. This rare sight captivated the students, serving as a powerful reminder of Malaysia’s rich biodiversity and setting an unforgettable tone for the trip.

Upon arrival at Pulau Banding, the group boarded a houseboat, their home for the next three days, surrounded by the serene waters of Royal Belum Lake. As the houseboat glided through the calm waters, students were introduced to the beauty and tranquility of the Royal Belum Rainforest, one of the world’s oldest rainforests and a vital part of Malaysia’s ecological heritage. The journey quickly transitioned from awe to action as the group embarked on a series of curated activities.

The first major highlight was a visit to a Jahai Indigenous Village, where students engaged with the Orang Asli community. This cultural exchange offered a glimpse into their unique traditions, way of life, and deep connection to the natural world. Many students reflected on the importance of staying connected to one’s roots, a lesson that resonated deeply with the diverse international group.

Nature exploration was a key theme throughout the trip. The students trekked through dense rainforests to reach stunning sites like the Sungai Koi Waterfall and the Sungai Ruok Waterfall. Along the way, they learned to adapt to unexpected challenges, such as blocked trails and steep climbs, which tested their endurance and resilience. Although the much-anticipated sighting of the elusive Rafflesia flower did not materialize, the experience reinforced a valuable lesson: hope for the best but prepare for the unexpected.

Beyond the rainforest, the group also visited the Salt Lick Animal Spot, a hotspot for wildlife observation. Here, students gained insights into conservation efforts and the delicate balance required to maintain such an ecosystem. Complementing the educational aspects of the trip were moments of fun and relaxation, including bamboo rafting, kayaking, and swimming in the tranquil lake. These activities provided opportunities for bonding, teamwork, and moments of pure joy amidst nature. Evenings aboard the houseboat were equally memorable. After days filled with exploration, students gathered for cultural exchange sessions. A BBQ dinner brought everyone together to share stories, laughter, and reflections on their shared journey. These moments of connection deepened the sense of community among the participants, transforming the houseboat into a floating haven of friendship and learning.

The journey wasn’t just about adventure; it was also a profound learning experience. Students reflected on personal growth through the challenges they faced. Hiking steep trails taught them the value of persistence and adaptability, while team games revealed the importance of consistent leadership and mutual trust. For many, these lessons were as impactful as the scenic beauty they witnessed.  As the group disembarked the houseboat and began their journey back to Kuala Lumpur, they carried with them not just souvenirs but also a renewed sense of energy and a deeper appreciation for nature and culture. The journey, which began with an awe-inspiring encounter with elephants, ended with heartfelt gratitude from students for the meticulous planning and care shown by the UTM International team.

This trip was about more than just exploring a beautiful rainforest,” said one participant. “It was about learning, connecting, and growing as individuals and as a community. The memories we’ve created here will stay with us forever.”

The EduTourism Experience @ Royal Belum Rainforest 2024 exemplified UTM International Kuala Lumpur’s commitment to providing international students with enriching opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. By blending adventure with education and culture, UTM International Kuala Lumpur continues to foster global citizens equipped to navigate and contribute to an interconnected world.
