KUALA LUMPUR – From August 9 to 11, 2024, 30 international students from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur, accompanied by 7 staff members, went on a trip to Penang, one of Malaysia’s most culturally and historically vibrant states. During the trip, the students, who came from diverse countries such as China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Philippines, got to experience Penang’s unique mix of natural beauty, historical sites, and local culture for the first time. Over three days, they visited iconic locations, tried local cuisine, and fully immersed themselves in the rich heritage that makes Penang a top destination in Malaysia.
The trip started at the Penang Botanical Garden, where the students were introduced to Malaysia’s lush tropical flora. The gardens provided a peaceful setting for the group to relax and appreciate the region’s natural beauty. Afterwards, they visited Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), one of the top research universities in Malaysia, to gain insights into the country’s higher education landscape.
In the afternoon, the group explored Padang Kota Lama, a historic site that vividly showcases Penang’s colonial past. The day concluded with a lively evening at Batu Ferringhi Night Market, where students indulged in local street food and shopped for traditional crafts. The night market offered a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and flavors, making it a highlight of the first day.
On the second day, the students ascended Penang Hill and enjoyed panoramic views of the island and the mainland. The cooler climate and breathtaking vistas provided a refreshing contrast to the urban hustle below. Following this, the group visited Pulau Aman, a small island renowned for its tranquil atmosphere and traditional fishing village charm. Here, they experienced a slice of rural Malaysian life, far removed from the bustling cityscapes.
The day ended with a seafood dinner by the shore at Teluk Aman. Students enjoyed tasting fresh, locally sourced seafood prepared in the traditional Malay style. The dinner, set against the backdrop of the setting sun, was an unforgettable experience, highlighting the culinary richness of Penang’s coastal regions.
On the last day, the group returned to Batu Ferringhi to relax on its well-known beaches. The students participated in different beach activities, such as swimming and sunbathing. Visiting the Floating Mosque at Batu Ferringhi offered many a moment of spiritual reflection as they admired the mosque’s elegant architecture standing over the water.
Students used this day to reflect on their experiences over the past three days. For many, this trip was not just about seeing new sights but also about understanding the cultural and religious diversity that defines Malaysia. The floating mosque symbolized the harmonious coexistence of different faiths in the country.
The UTM Kuala Lumpur trip to Penang was more than just a sightseeing tour; it was a journey of discovery, cultural exchange, and personal growth. For the international students, many of whom were visiting Penang for the first time, the trip provided a deeper understanding of Malaysia’s history, geography, and cultural tapestry. They left with lasting memories and a newfound appreciation for the country’s diverse heritage. This trip will undoubtedly remain a highlight of their time at UTM, fostering a greater connection between their academic pursuits and the vibrant world outside the classroom.
