UTM OTEC and Shell MRE Join Forces for OTEC Feasibility Study

by | Jan 31, 2024 | UTM NewsHub

Shell’s Marine Renewable Program (Shell-MRE) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Ocean Thermal Energy Centre (UTM OTEC) have joined hands to carry out a feasibility study on the potential of an offshore Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant in Malaysia. This study aims to evaluate the technical feasibility of both traditional OTEC and hybrid-OTEC systems for an offshore plant, unlocking the potential of OTEC in Malaysia. Additionally, the study will delve into the economic and environmental implications of OTEC development.

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a renewable energy source that can produce electricity by utilizing the temperature difference between surface and deep seawater. This technology not only provides baseload power but also has the potential to generate fresh water and support marine cultures and other products through the integration of deep seawater. OTEC can address global issues such as climate change, freshwater production, and food security, which are in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The partnership between Shell-MRE and UTM OTEC brings together their expertise in innovation, research, and industry knowledge. Both organizations share a common goal of advancing OTEC technology. Shell-MRE commends UTM OTEC for their commitment to developing OTEC through research, innovation, and entrepreneurship while also prioritizing the educational aspect of human capital development in OTEC technology.
