Faculty of Science, UTM organised a Popular Science Seminar Series in collaboration with Advanced Optical Materials Research Group (AOMRG), MASS Chapter UTM and Frontier Material Research Alliance (FMRA) entitled Webinar on Exploring Biomaterials and Nanomaterials in Medical Applications: Innovations and Insights-Series I on 23 November 2023. The invited speaker was Prof. Dr. Devendra Mohan, from Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology (GJUST), India.

The session started with the idea of innovation in nanotechnology introduced by Richard Feynman, a laureate of the Nobel Prize in 1959. Since that, the evolution of nanotechnology has grown rapidly until now. The smart nanomaterials are categorised into different groups using the applied stimuli (diagnosis, therapy, and theranostics). The properties of smart nanomaterials are modified by external triggers in a controlled way. Interestingly, Prof. Dr. Devendra Mohan highlighted the development of biomaterials and nanomaterials in medical applications such as drug delivery systems, wound healing dressing, and tissue engineering.

Additionally, Prof. Dr. Devendra Mohan also discussed specifically the state-of-art of nanomaterials in drug delivery systems such as light-responsive nanomaterials, photo-dynamic therapy (PDT) for tumor diagnosis and therapy, besides magnetic responsive materials as a new invention in medical applications.

During the Q & A session, Prof. Dr. Devendra Mohan was asked about the impact of the incorporation of chitosan and the possibility of using carboxymethyl cellulose as biomaterials in biomedical applications. According to him, it is possible since both of these nanomaterials and other types of green polymers have been successfully applied not only for drug delivery systems but also for other related applications including engineering and energy materials.
