ITU Online Training: Human Exposure to 5G Electromagnetic Fields – Guidelines Measurement & Case Studies

Oct 10, 2022

The ITU Asia Pacific Centre of Excellence Online Training Course on “Fifth Generation (5G) Implementation: Practices and Case Studies”, was successfully conducted from 10th – 16th October 2022 using the ITU Academy platform and Zoom video conferencing tools. The online training workshop was successfully organized by the Wireless Communication Centre, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia and in collaboration with IEEE Malaysia Nuclear Agency.

48 participants from various industries, universities and government agency completed the programmed.

This course achieves a participation from local and international participants and attended by 74% local participants and 26% international participants. Overseas participations are from Mexico (2), Macau (2), Mauritius (2), Australia (1), Sudan (2), Jamaica (2), From 48 participants who attended the online training, 57% were from the industry and 43% were from academia. In terms of gender distribution, a representation of 62% male participants and 38% female participants have participated in this training. Figure 3 shows the group photo taken during the live session.

Training Course Structure

5th Generation (5G) network is currently in implementation phase. The implementation of key 5G radio technologies such as millimetre wave, beamforming and small cell requires specific guidelines, standards and measurement and methodology if compared to legacy technology. Meanwhile, misunderstanding of the public regarding human exposure to 5G EMF results in public resistance to 5G roll-outs. The course aims to provide a systematic view of the 5G EMF covering guidelines, standards, measurement methodology and case studies in order to address the misunderstanding of the human exposure to 5G EMF.

The learning objectives of the course are

• To equip participants with an understanding of the fundamental of EMF emission and

the relation between the 5G radio technology and EMF.

• To equip participants with an understanding of international guidelines and standards

on human exposure to 5G EMF.

• To equip participants with practical laboratory EMF and SAR measurement techniques.

• To equip participants with practical on-site 5G EMF measurement and monitoring

techniques.

• To equip participants with best practices through measurement case study.

• To expose participants on the public education strategy related to 5G EMF exposure

and health concern.
