UTM and HYU Forge Research Partnership to Advance 6G Communication for Connected Vehicles,

JOHOR BAHRU, 26 June – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Industry-University Cooperation Foundation Hanyang University (HYU) in South Korea to conduct joint research on 6G communication technology.
The MoA was signed by Prof. Dr. Rosli Md. Illias, the UTM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), and Prof. Dr. Joongmoo Byun, the President of IUCF-HYU. The signing ceremony of the MoA was witnessed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhudah Seman, the Director of Wireless Communication Centre (WCC) at UTM, and Prof. Dr. Sunwoo Kim, the Director of 5G/Unmanned Vehicle Research Centre (5GUVRC) at HYU. This MoA signifies the collaboration between WCC UTM and 5GUVRC HYU in a joint research project to develop next-generation vehicle-to-everything communication technology for the emerging use case of connected and autonomous vehicles.
Prof. Dr. Rosli Md. Illias stated that this collaboration between UTM and HYU aligns with UTM’s strategic plan, enVision UTM 2025. He expressed his vision for the partnership to push boundaries and achieve lasting impact in research. HYU is a leading university in South Korea and is renowned for its top engineering colleges. It is considered a growth engine for the country. The research team at UTM is led by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Leow Chee Yen (Bruce), Research Fellow at the Wireless Communication Centre.
Through this MoA, UTM and HYU will embark on a joint research project to develop next-generation technology, commonly known as 6G. This technology combines communication, localization, sensing, and intelligence to achieve ultra-reliable and low-latency communication for connected and autonomous vehicles. The project, titled “Situational Awareness and Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Millimeter Wave Vehicle-to-Everything Communication,” will be jointly funded by UTM and HYU for a period of 2 years.

Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Laboratory, WCC UTM Johor Bahru has been invited to to join Open Day exhibition as accredited laboratory that organized by Pusat Pengurusan Makmal Universiti (PPMU). The visitor for this program are from industries, research institutes, universities and laboratories. The purpose of this exhibition is to promote the services and facilities provided by the SAR Laboratory in addition to increasing the visibility of WCC as wireless technology research centre. There are various activities carried out such as expert talk session, industry booth visit, interactive games, laboratory visit, quizzes and food truck.

ASEAN Makerthon,
02-04 December 2019
UTM in collaboration with MCMC, ARM, Celcom Axiata Berhad and Ericsson Malaysia has hosted ASEAN Makerthon 2019 from 02nd to 04th December 2019 at the UTM-Ericsson 5G Innovation Center (IC5G) in UTM Kuala Lumpur’s campus. The three-days event was the first to launch Makerthon using a closed-source 5G network. The Makerthon sets the aim of providing platform for participants to showcase their skills, ideas and creativity in producing physical prototypes in line with the theme of ‘The 5G Revolution Impact Towards Industrial Revolution 4.0’ .



Working Visit With MCMC to Japan,

Prof. Dr. Tharek Abdul Rahman attended C&C User Forum and iEXPO 2019: Digital Inclusion (Digital Creates a Brighter Future for All) and working visit at Tokyo, Japan on 05th – 09th November 2019 as members of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) delegation.
The event is organised by NEC C&C System Users Association and NEC with the objective to provides “Solution for Society” that create the social values of security, safety, efficiency, and equality around the world. This event featured a variety of lectures, seminars, and exhibits. The lectures and seminars included sessions led by top corporate executives and prominent experts from different fields and the exhibits, provide a showcase “NEC Safer Cities” through specific case studies of building safe and secure cities and “NEC Value Chain Innovation,” which generates new values for people, things, and processes beyond corporate and industrial boundaries, and introduce more advanced concepts on how social value creation is made possible by combining these two initiatives.
From this working visit, all MCMC delegation will get the opportunity to experience leading-edge ICT and wide array of solutions and services, as well as enable them to generate new ideas and hints.


5G Seminars: “Beyond Imiginatios” for application Pahang Go,

Prof. Dr. Tharek Abdul Rahman attended the 5G Seminars: “Beyond Imiginatios” for application Pahang Go that was held at Auditorium UCYP, Kampus Utama Tanjung Lumpur. Prof. Dr. Tharek Abdul Rahman was present to share his views and insights on 5G.
The event was held in front of 300 participants from the industry and students of the Institute of Higher Education (IPT) around Pahang and officiated by Pahang State Science, Technology, Green Technology, Communications and Multimedia Committee Chairman DB ‘Dato’ Mohammad Fakhruddin Bin Mohd Ariff. .
This seminar is an initiative of the UCYP Faculty of Science & Technology for the purpose of fostering and raising awareness of 5G technology that will be implemented by 2022 for Institute of Higher Education (IPT) students and industry residents. In addition, the seminar was co-sponsored by the giant telecommunications equipment company HUAWEI Technology (Malaysia) and received full support from the Malaysian Communications & Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in providing exposure to the industry as well as students and IPT students.
Among the objectives of this seminar are to:
- Provides awareness of 5G technology knowledge and issues
- Strengthen relationships between industry partners and academic institutions
- To work with industry partners on academic related programs

Innovate Johor Program (WCC Laboratory Tour),

On 30 September 2019 to 02 October 2019, UTM has organized the Johor Innovate Program which is an annual university research event collaboration within by UTM and Johor State Government. Innovate Johor 2019 featured the theme “Innovation Towards Sustainable Entrepreneurship”. The program also involved government and private agencies throughout the state of Johor, industry, IPT, secondary and primary schools around Johor.
In conjunction with this program, WCC has been selected as one of the research center for the Campus Lab Tour which is attended by several Higher Education Institute such as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Lab, Long Term Evolution (LTE) Lab, Wireless Industry Emission (WIE) Lab and Anechoic Chamber Lab. The visitors were taken to the laboratories such as SAR Laboratory, WIE & LTE Laboratory and Anechoic Chamber Laboratory accompanied by Dr. Omar and WCC staff.

The 5th Meeting of the APT Conference Preparatory Group for WRC-19 (APG19-5),

Prof. Dr. Tharek Abdul Rahman attended the 5th Meeting of APT Conference Preparatory Group for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (APG19-5) that hold on 31st July 2019 to 06th August 2019 in Tokyo, Japan, as members of the Malaysian delegation.
The meeting is organised by the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) with the objective to harmonise views and develop APT Common Proposal for APT member countries in preparation for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019.


The National 5G Task Force,

Prof. Dr. Tharek Abdul Rahman attended The National 5G Task Force Mid-Term Report handover ceremony that was held at the MCMC Old Building in Cyberjaya. The 5G Special Task Force has presented its Mid-Term Report to YB Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Communication and Multimedia.
The National 5G Task Force Mid-Term Report is a testbed for the 5G service network that will be widened to five states after implemented in Putrajaya and Cyberjaya on April. The five implemented states are Selangor, Perak, Terengganu, Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory and Kedah. The report was important for the nation to make a study on the implementation of the 5G services, encompassing the spectrum management and allocation, infrastructure, regulatory and business case. Besides, the report was crucial in ensuring that Malaysia achieved the aspiration to implement the 5G in the first quarter or middle of next year, with a focus on specific industries.
The team was given mandate to evolve as the 5G Implementation Task Force upon completion of its current tasks by end of the year before being presented to the Cabinet. Hack for Good Award Ceremony and Technology Showcase (Hackathon),

Hack for Good Award Ceremony and Technology Showcase was held on April 2018 at UTM-Ericsson Innovation Centre for 5G, Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia Open Data Hackathon 2018 is a product or application development competition using a set of data provided in the Malaysian Open Data Portal as a base data while using other data sources. The organization of the Hackathon is aimed at providing knowledge-sharing space, promoting public service digital products or initiatives and promoting community involvement in developing innovative products using Open Data Malaysia.
After 30 days of hacking, judging was conducted on 24th April and winners were announced on 25th April. Winners walked away with RM51k of prizes and express tickets to post-hackathon incubation programme to turn ideas into businesses.

Bhd. bagi menjayakan program libatsama komuniti UTM & Ericsson Connected Mangrove. Program seumpama ini menunjukkan UTM komited dalam memastikan hubungan libatsama komuniti dan jaringan industri termaktub dalam dasar dan kerja projek. Dalam usaha gigih meningkatkan penglibatan komuniti universiti dan industri, pada masa yang sama kita juga mampu menjalinkan hubungan serta terus meneroka dan memanfaatkan keupayaan dan kepakaran masing-masing. Program ini telah dijalankan di Kg. Dato Homat, Sabak Bernam, Selangor melibatkan 40 orang pelajar UTM dengan matlamat utama untuk mempelajari pelaksanaan teknologi IoT dalam hutan bakau.
