UTM CEE Expands International Impact with Workshop on OBE-Focused Assessment in Indonesia

By Dr. Aishah Rosli (aishahrosli@utm.my)

SEMARANG, Nov 28 – In an era of rapid technological advancement and shifting job markets, higher education institutions are under increasing pressure to develop graduates who meet the demands of industry hiring needs. As industries seek professionals equipped with cutting-edge skills, practical knowledge, and adaptability, academic institutions are rethinking their approaches to education and workforce preparation.

The gap between traditional academic outputs and industry expectations is narrowing as universities focus on integrating real-world applications into their curricula. Programs are being designed with input from industry leaders, ensuring that graduates are not only well-versed in theoretical knowledge but also prepared to tackle practical challenges.

To ensure that the programs at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) meet the requirements set by the Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (IABEE), the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamari, sought the expertise of the UTM Centre for Engineering Education (UTM CEE). He arranged for a workshop on course and program assessment for the university’s lecturers.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yudariah Mohammad Yusof and Dr. Nurzal Effiyana Ghazali, who have extensive experience in conducting training for Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and assessment programs, were invited to lead the workshop titled “UNDIPxUTM International Workshop on Course Assessment and Program Assessment.” The workshop drew over 50 participants from various faculties, who engaged in sharing sessions with the experts from UTM CEE and participated in numerous activities during the interactive workshop. These activities made use of various digital technologies, allowing attendees to experience student-centered learning in action.

The three-day workshop, held at the Dekanat Fakultas Teknik, UNDIP on November 25th, 26th, and 28th, began with an introduction to the participants, who were novices in Outcome-Based Education (OBE). The workshop then focused on various aspects of course assessment, including assessment techniques and alternative assessments. It progressed to topics such as constructive alignment, rubrics, and continuous quality improvement (CQI), ensuring that all course assessments aligned with the needs of the program.

The training was facilitated by Dr. Aishah Rosli and Dr. Mitra Mohd Addi, who guided participants through various activities, answered questions, and provided feedback to smaller groups.
