In a significant step towards promoting inclusive collaboration, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) in Nigeria and the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have announced plans to collaborate on impactful programs starting in 2025. This partnership, particularly under the Centre for Real Estate Studies (CRES) and the Real Estate Department, aims to facilitate cross-border academic exchanges, research, and development focused on environmental science, sustainable development, and urban planning.

Strengthening Collaborative Potential

The collaboration intends to create a framework for sharing knowledge and resources, emphasizing the need to address critical environmental and infrastructural challenges faced by both Malaysia and Nigeria. The faculties will work together to integrate teaching, research, and community service in ways that foster sustainable solutions. This partnership will also aim to develop joint academic programs, specialized workshops, and opportunities for student exchanges.

A notable aspect of this collaboration is the strong relationship between the alumni and faculty members of both institutions. Over the years, graduates from UNILORIN and UTM have maintained robust connections, contributing to a thriving network of professionals in environmental science and the built environment. This ongoing bond between past and present students has established mutual respect and trust between the two faculties, paving the way for deeper, more meaningful collaborations in the future.

“We are excited about the potential this partnership holds for both institutions. It offers an opportunity not only to bridge academic knowledge but also to create programs that are relevant to our local communities while making a global impact. We are committed to ensuring that this collaboration results in long-term, high-impact solutions for our countries. Our alumni have played a crucial role in strengthening the ties between the two institutions. They have supported the development of academic and professional programs, and their involvement in this collaboration will bring invaluable insights and expertise,” said Associate Professor Ts. Sr. Dr. Noorsidi Aizuddin Hj. Mat Noor.

The two faculties are planning a series of initiatives to enhance research capacities in areas such as climate change, urban sustainability, and infrastructure development. One initiative includes establishing a joint research center focused on developing solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change on urban populations in Malaysia and Nigeria. Students from both universities will also benefit from an interdisciplinary approach to learning, equipping them with the skills necessary to address global challenges in the environmental and built environment sectors.

This collaboration marks a significant advancement in the academic relations between UNILORIN and UTM. The aim is to deliver far-reaching benefits for students, alumni, and the communities they serve. The collective efforts of these esteemed faculty members are sure to have a lasting impact both regionally and globally.
