PAGOH, 30 May 2025 – Innovation in bioprocessing took center stage as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), Indonesia, strengthened their international collaboration through the 9th ICA Webinar Series. Held online, the webinar, titled ‘Ecoferment with Yeast: Innovative Agro-Industrial Waste Management for Alternative Protein Production and Food Security,’ drew researchers, students, NGOs, and members of the public from both Malaysia and Indonesia.

The webinar, which ran from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Malaysian time), was a joint effort between UTM’s Innovation Centre in Agrotechnology for Advanced Bioprocessing (ICA) and UNJ’s International Collaborative Community Services (PPM-KI) program. This collaboration highlights a long-standing commitment between the two institutions to advance research and development in agrotechnology and bioprocessing.

The focus of the webinar was on innovative approaches to agro-industrial waste management, specifically utilizing ecofermentation with yeast to produce alternative proteins and enhance food security. Participants explored the potential of transforming agricultural by-products into valuable resources, addressing both environmental concerns and nutritional needs. The discussion aligned with global efforts to promote sustainable bioeconomy practices and enhance food security through innovative technologies.

ICA, UTM has been at the forefront of agrotechnology research, consistently seeking innovative solutions to address challenges in the agriculture sector. This webinar series serves as a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, fostering a vibrant community of researchers and practitioners. UTM’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goals was also emphasized during the event, showcasing the university’s dedication to addressing global challenges through research and innovation.
