I am glad to inform you that Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) will be conducting a research mission to Antarctica, from 25th February – 15th March 2015. Six UTM researchers will participate in the mission, from a diverse range of research expertise, including geospatial science and technology, remotelyoperated vehicle (ROV) technology, sports science, and microbiology.
This mission is fully organised by UTM, assisted by staffs from Ocean Expeditions, an Antarctic research vessel operator. Ocean Expeditions is headed by Mr. Ben Wallis, an experienced skipper for the polar regions.
UTM researchers will be conducting several experiments in the areas surrounding the Antarctic peninsula, and collecting soil, sea water and ice samples. This mission is expected to significantly contribute to the high impact research activities currently undergoing at UTM, and we believe will contribute to the societal well being and development of Malaysia towards becoming a knowledgebased nation.
UTM-Antarctic research group was formed in late 2012 and received a research grant for a program entitled ‘Impact of Climate Change on Tropical Antartica Region – A Socio-Ecological Perspective’, lead by INSTeG Director, Prof. Sr. Dr. Mazlan Hashim. This group consists of researchers from the Institute for Geospatial Science & Technology (INSTeG), Sustainability Research Alliance (SRA), Environmental Biotechnology Research Group (EnviBio), Sports Technology Innovation Centre (SITC), Automotive Development Centre (ADC) and Ibnu Sina Institute (IIS). For raising the quality of research, expeditions to Antarctic was designed to collect samples of the latest research and may be used for testing the prototype in an environment of extreme cold at the South Pole. The expedition is scheduled to begin on 26 March to 19 April 2015.
This expedition will use the service by a company cruise sailings, Ocean Expeditions Limited which offers special cruise packages for conducting scientific research activities in Antarctica. This expedition includes four research projects, namely Impact of Climate Change on Antarctic-Tropic region, Fundamental Science, Fitness-Science (Physical, Physiological & Psilogical) and Ice Transportation and involves a total of six researchers from UTM.

Starting from 2014, INSTeG is one of the Associate Member of Asian Association on Remote Sensing (AARS), together with Canadian as the Chairman, Paris, Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom, USA, Switzerland and Japan. It is an Asian non-governmental organization established in 1981 dedicated to promote Remote Sensing through exchange of information, mutual cooperation and international understanding and goodwill amongst the member countries of Asia-Pacific Region. AARS is one of the largest organizations in its field with over 29 member countries. The membership of INSTeG as AARS membership has decided by the General Conference (GC) in conjunction with the 35th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing (ACRS 2014) held at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar from 27- 31, October 2014.
