About 200 participants from Asian most well known technical universities have participated in the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) host Southeast Asia Technical University Consortium (SEATUC) 2014.

The universities were Shibaura Institute of Technology (Japan), Hanoi University of Science & Technology (Vietnam), Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Vietnam), Institut Teknologi Bandung (Indonesia), Suranaree University of Technology (Thailand), Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (Thailand).

The UTM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ir. Dr. Wahid Omar in his speech said that the SEATUC is a forum for the above universities in running the Hybrid Twinning Program.

“The Hybrid Twinning Program is an international joint graduate level education program that cooperates (‘twinning’) with partner universities in Southeast Asia and combines (‘hybrid’) Master’s and Doctor’s programs.

“Concretely, Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) accepts students from prestigious Southeast Asia engineering universities,” he said.

Under this program, students from partner universities will be accepted to SIT after the first year of their Master’s Program.

“Here, they will obtain a Master degree from both SIT and their home universities once they have completed their education with instruction in English.

“Furthermore they will pursue their PhD’s program at SIT upon request from their home universities where English is also the language of instruction. So far, 29 students have completed PhD where two of them are from UTM,” said Prof. Wahid.

Since its establishment in 2005, the SEATUC symposium has put an aim to contribute to the fostering of talented individuals in Japan and Asia to promote exchange between the countries and institutions involved.

This symposium is also in line definitely in line with UTM’s pledge to ensure its high competitiveness in terms of R&D activities of UTM as Research University.
