KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 30 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Library Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with the Postgraduate Student Society (PGSS), Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), successfully organized a workshop titled “Journal Article Writing: Effective Strategies for High-Impact Publishing.”

The session was delivered by Ts. Dr. Luqman Hakim Ahmad Shah, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanical & Automotive Engineering Technology (FTKMA), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), with extensive experience in Mechanical and Materials Engineering, especially in friction stir and laser welding. With over 14 years in academia, Dr. Luqman is also a passionate user of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, actively incorporating them in academic writing and research productivity.

The workshop attracted more than 40 enthusiastic postgraduate students and early-career researchers. The session was designed to empower participants with essential knowledge and practical strategies to write and publish impactful journal articles. Key topics included the types of academic articles, how to identify legitimate journals using Web of Science and Scopus, avoiding predatory journals, and how to construct effective abstracts, introductions, methodologies, and discussions.

A key component of the workshop focused on the responsible use of generative AI tools in academic writing. Dr. Luqman introduced participants to platforms such as ChatGPT, Canva AI, Jenni.ai, SciSpace, and Inciteful.xyz. These tools can assist in ideation, literature reviews, improving sentence flow, and preparing content. However, he reminded the audience, “Generative AI is a tool—it’s neutral. Use it to enhance your writing, not to replace your thinking.” The workshop emphasized the importance of maintaining academic integrity, paraphrasing, citing sources, and avoiding unethical use of AI-generated images or content.

Participants responded positively to the session, with many praising the practicality of the content and the engaging delivery by the speaker. One participant remarked, “This event truly helped my understanding on improving my paper writing knowledge and teaches me on how to plan my writing paper journey to be able to publish in a high-impact paper.” Another recommended that similar workshops be made mandatory for first-year postgraduate students. Suggestions for improvement, such as sharing slides in advance and including more hands-on activities, were also noted and appreciated by the organizing team.

Adding further value to the event, Dr. Luqman introduced his bestselling book titled “Menulis Artikel Jurnal: Panduan Lengkap Terbitkan Artikel Berimpak Tinggi,” which was made available for purchase during the workshop. As a gesture of goodwill, he also donated a copy to UTM Library Kuala Lumpur, ensuring wider access for future reference by students and staff. The book serves as a comprehensive guide for those aiming to succeed in academic publishing, especially in the Malaysian context.
